Bold Action Urged By Harry S. Truman Economic Action At Home, Abroad CHICAGO (UPD - Harry S. Truman today urged bold U. S. economic action both at home and abroad to meet a growing Soviet 'challenge and prevent losses in cherished American freedoms. The former president said unless such steps are taken, “there is a real possibility . . . Russia may become stronger than we are.” And in that event, Truman said, “We might lose our freedom, and we might lose it—not suddenly in a great wpr—but slowly by degrees, over a long time, without a shot being fired.” In a speech prepared for delivery before the 60th Grand Aerie convention of the fraternal order of Eagles, an organization of which he has long been a member. Truman said citizens of the United States “are in the habit of thinking that if there is no shooting, we are at peace.” “That is not true,” he said. “Even in the absence of actual warfare, we can be engaged in a life-and-death struggle to preserve our liberties.” Truman said the current cold war can have victories and defeats “just as decisive as the victories in a shooting war.” “Our danger is that we may not recognize this fact, and that we may be misled by demagogues of the peace - at - any - price variety, who say we are not in trouble simply because there is no armed conflict.” To Attend Christian Booksellers Meeting The 9th annual Christian booksellers’ association convention will be held at the Sheraton Hotel, St. Louis, Mo., August 10-14. Over 100 wholesale sellers will be present to display Christian books, church and Sunday school supplies and Bibles. Sunday afternoon at 2:30, top recording artists, such as the Old Fashioned Revival Hour quartet, Rudy Atwood, Stuart Hamblem and Bill Carle, will present an informal concert. Dr. Norman B. Harrison will be the devotional speaker every morning. A tour of Concordia Publishing House. St. Louis, will be one feature of this convention which Mrs. George Helm and daughter, Joyce, will attend in the interest of the Christian book & supply store here. 50-Cent Dividend By National Tea Company National Tea Co., owners of the Standard supermarket chain, declared a 50-cept per $5 share dividend for the third quarter of 1958. TEEL (Continued from page one) “had confidence she would take care of him .. . she is very devoted to the boy.” The coroner verdict was filed by Dr. Roy Storms. Prosecutor John Tinder also predicted a grand jury would return a first degree murder indictment against Teel’s admitted slayer, Mrs. Connie Nicholas, 42. The prosecutor said he would oppose any defense maneuver to reduce the charge against Mrs. Nicholas to manslaughter. Defense attorneys contend Mrs. Nicholas shot Teel in self defense during a violent argument. Mrs. Nicholas was expected to be taken to court by ambulance Thursday for a hearing. Dr. 'Diomas A. Rofalski said Mrs. Nicholas, who is recovering from an overdose of sleeping pills, was in good condition. “We feel from a medical standpoint that she can go to the hearing Diursday,”' Rofalski said, “but she must go in an ambulance and then right back to the hospital.” Tinder told newsmen late Tuesday there was “no evidence of self defense” in the slaying of the married executive vice president of th Eli Lilly drug manufacturing firm. “Hiere was never any clearer case of premeditated murder,” Tinder charged. He said Mrs. Nicholas “procured a lethal weap on and after she had determined he (Teel) was throwing her over for a younger woman, she shot him.” Teel, 54, was shot and killed early last Thursday. Mrs. Nicholas later admitted to newsmen and police she followed Teel to a rendezvous with a younger woman and confronted him with a gun to “scare him” when he left the apartment of Laura Mowrer, 29. Teel was married.
