Berserk Fori Wayne Youth In Custody No One InjurecHn Series Os Gunshots FORT WAYTfE, Ind. (UPD—A berserk youth drove his parents from their home with a gun Monday night, shot at several neighboring homes and fired on police. No one was injured. Held in Allen County Jail here in lieu of $5,000 bond was Lyle A. Young, 19. who eventually was persuaded to give himself up. Lt. Richard Fleischman of the Fort Wayne police said the youth began shooting at his family “for no apparent reason” and drove them from the house. Young then ran outside and began firing a shotgun at neighboring homea. As officers Robert C. Smith and Dan Scribner arrived at the scene in answer to frantic calls from neighbors. Young ran back into the house and took up a position in an upstairs window, Young took a shot at them. The blast hit the front of the car. Scribner fired at the house to scare Young away from the window. Th officers then radioed for help. Reinforcements arrived. After conferring with neighbors, police blocked off all streets in the area, surrounded the house and ordered Young to come out with his hands in the air. A few minutes later, the youth appeared at the front door with his hands raised and was taken into custody. Authorities said they found two shotguns, a rifle and “plenty of ammunition” beside the upstairs window where Young fired on the patrol car. There was no explanation for the boy’s action. But a neighbor said Young, a slightly built youth, was sensitive about his size and believed “the whole world was against him.” Continued Showers Forecast In State July To Depart On Familiar Wet Note United Press International / The month of marked by one rain after another, was destined to depart on the familiar moist note Thursday* in Indiana. Auto Negotiations Are Resumed Today Delay Meeting To Set Strike Deadline DETROIT (UPD — The United Auto Workers Union has postponed for a week an executive board meeting that is expected to set a strike ,deadline for its contract talks with the auto industry. The announcement came as the UAW resumed its talks today with Ford, Chrysler and General Motors after recessing Thursday. The meeting was originally scheduled for Friday but the Union said it was set back to Aug. 8 because a "meeting of the union’s national General Motors, Ford and Chrysler councils had to be delayed. The UAW said it wanted to hold the national councils’ meeting on the day after the executive meet-ing-adding weight to the belief a strike deadline would be set by th executive board and ratified by the national councils. The national councils have the sole power to set strike dates but any “recommendation” by the executive board, the top governing body of the union, is sure to be accepted by the councils. A union spokesman said the executive board would not pick a target company but it would be selected some time close before the strike began so the union could judge from up-to-date information which company would be most susceptible to strike pressures.
