Two weeks of good, hot weather would not only help the farmers, it would also directly benefit the Decatur merchants. Cool weather has dampened interest in warm-weather apparel, outdoor furniture, air cooling equipment, and picnic supplies. Some hot weather would boom these businesses. —w-o o A n interesting publication, Middle-East Press Review, is now being mailed to newspaper editors on a monthly basis. The booklet is apparently printed by American Christians of Lebanese background. course', very much interested in keeping Lebanon out of any United Arab Republic. Lebanon lies on the Mediterranean Sea, a country 120 miles long and 30 to 35 miles wide. It borders on Israel and Syria. It contains the famous Bib-lical-cities of Tyre and Sidon, and is known historically as Phoenicia. At the present time, Christians of various communions form a slight majority over the Moslems. The Christians of Lebanon have been more friendly towards the formation of the state of Israel than any other group insthe Middle East. Lebanon has, however, been a member of the Arab league. Two cities in Lebanon, Tripqli and Saida, are terminals of oil pipelines from Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Lebanon was formed from five former Turkish empire districts and became an independent state in 1920. It was occupied by the French, however, until 1946; which has left a bad taste in the mouths of the population there. The 66 members of its one-house chamber of deputies are elected for four-year terms, while the president serves a six-year term. Elections, to be held this month, may be postponed. The rebels believe that Chamoun, the incumbent, wants to change the constitution illegally so that he may succeed himself as president.

Most of us arc familiar with the DEW-line. This is the complex radar system that blankets a line across Alaska, Canada and Greenland to prevent a sneak attack on the U. S. The DEW line will be effective only against airplanes, and low-flying, "airbreathing” missiles of the comparatively slow models. It cannot detect faster, high - trajectory, rocket-propelled missiles. Since the USSR has developed an IBM (intercontinental ballistics missile), a new warning system is peeded. Construction has now started on the BMEWS, the ballistic missile early warning systerh; Construction problems“’’are'*” most difficult. The missile must be discovered as it is fired, and then tracked for direction. The new defense line will not be completed until 1960. One station will be in Alaska, one in Greenland. —o—-o The U. S. department of agri- ] culture, in an attempt to save the ] hide of Sec. Ezra "Low Farm ] Prices” Benson, reports that the ] farmers’ realized net income for ] the first half of 1958 is 22% high- ] er than the revised estimate for ] the first half of 1957. To arrive ] at this rather high percentage, | the department compared the , first-half 1958 estimate, a prelim- ] inary figure by the way, with the ] final 1957 figure, revised down- , ward from its own preliminary ( level. 'Phen the first-half 1958 fig- ' \ure included* cash receipts for , pome reduction in farm i due to delayed 1 marketing. When i this is taken into account, the net income is actually 13% increased over the 1957 figure. Blit what the department does not admit, is that the 1957 percentage J which net farm income is of i gross farm income, is just ] 33.1%, the lowest since 1932, and i second lowest since records were ' started in 1910. In 1957, farmers | represented 11.9% of the nation’s j population, yet their net income ] was only 4% of the national total, i
