Youth Wounded In Watermelon Theft Six Youths Admit Being In On Raid RICHMOND, Ind. (UPI) — Authorities today said Jerry Dils, 19, son of Richmond High School Basketball coach Charles Dils, has admitted he was wounded by a shotgyn blast Sunday while trying to steal watermelons. Dils, in good condition in Reid Memorial Hospital, first told authorities he was hit in the legs by buckshot fired frbm a car along a road when he shouted a taunting remark at the occupants. Tuesday, a fruit stand operator, W. H. Balthis, appeared at the police station and said his son Richj»rd, 14, fired at two youths running away from the stand with a watermelon. Authorities then questioned Dils. He and five other youths promptly admitted they were on a melon raid when the shooting occurred. They said their original story was intended to protect Dils’ father. Authorities said Bob Swallow, 18, senior quarterback on Richmond’s football team last year, was in on the raid.
