Opposed To Federal Scholarship Funds Manion Committee Reports To Handley INDIANAPOLIS (UPD —Governor Handley plans to use the Manion committee report on science education in Indiana in his attack on a House bill now pending in Washington for the appropriation of nearly a billion dollars for federal scholarships. At a news conference Wednesday, Handley’s educational advisers announced a special survey turned up only 53 outstanding June high school graduates in In'diana who needed full or partial financial assistance to study mathematics and science in college. Clarertce Manion, former dean of the Notre Dame Law School, told newsmen he had assurances of scholarships from all Indiana institutions, as Well as additional | funds from private sources which i would provide at least one year! o< college for each of the 53. Manion said his committee “canvassed every high school in Indiana . . . skimmed off the cream from seniors in the upper 10 per cent of their classes • • • I and found just 53 math and science specialists” in real need. . Manion pointed to the program I as proof neither Indiana nor any I other state needs federal aid for education. He said estimates show: Hoosiers would be taxed 18-25 mil-1 lion dollars as their share of the' proposed appropriation. High School Pupils Study Tax Returns 50,000 Ift Indiana Take Special Course Over 50,000 Indiana district high school students participated in a course in preparing federal income

tax returns during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1958, according to S. M. Dietrich, district director of internal revenue. This course was prepared by the internal revenue service several years ago. The cooperation of the nation’s high schools was asked in giving this course to high - school students as a part of the over-all i program to educate the taxpaying i public to prepare their own ,re- ■ turns.
