Get plenty of sleep before leaving on your trip this summer, and be wide awake for the drive. If you stop every two hours for gas, and get out of the car and walk around, you will feel much more refreshed. Remember to enjoy your trip. Don’t just make it a marathon nightmare. Always stop when you have difficulty concentrating on your driving. It’s important to all of us, and most of all to you, that you come back safe and alive. -i—-o——o— — The county CROP committee will try to raise one carload of soybeans as their goal this year. CROP stands for Christian Rural Overseas Program. Crops or credits towards soybeans donated to the CROP committee may be distributed abroad through the National Council of Churches, or by Lutheran, Catholic or Evangelical agencies if so specified by the donor. This is a fine program for the farmers and citizens of one country to help those of another country without the red tape of loans, trade, etc. Goodwill built through the churches is the best that we can build. o o-— About 20 years ago the Indiana Historical Society purchased the Angel Mounds, near Evansville. This prehistoric Indian village site is being intensively studied under the direction of Glenn A. Black, archeologist for the society. Each year a field school for archeological students is held. The basic problem is to discover as much of the history of prehistoric peoples as possible. Miss Carol King Rachlin, one of the students, is attempting to help reconstruct the relationship between ancient cultures by a detailed study of fossil fabrics, She compares the fossil images with textiles used by present peoples and plots them on a map. The present working hypothesis is that the method of weaving used by the Angel Mounds people came from southern Mexico and Central America about 1200 A.D. Many questions still remain to be answered, including the relationship of the ancient Indian tribes with the Asiatic peoples.

The Rotary club did a fine job last week as host to 68 foreign exchange students. The students are now finishing a year of study In the United States, and are touring the country before returning to their homelands. The Rotary program is one of helps increase the understanding of America abroad. o o Venezuela now buys $1.5 billion In goods from the United States each year. An estimated 190,000 jobs in 45 states are completely dependent on this trade. But it must be ’trade. Venezuela ranks second only to Canada in what she buys from us because we buy oil and iron ore products from her. If trade is not reciprocal, Venezuela cannot obtain the dollars she needs to buy our products, and we accept only dollars. o o Hay and wheat suffered agair Thursday as rains blanketed the county dumping various amounts in different sectors. Adams county farmers found out that it certainly pays in a Democracy to keep all agencies informed of farm problems. Adams county has beeri placed on the list to obtain emergency loans, if necessary. This reduces the interest rate for farmers from 5% to 3%. It will give drowned out farmers another chance to survive until something is done about drainage in the Wabash and St. Mary's river basins. o o For many years Indiana’s Republican senators and representatives have voted against appropriations for flood control in other states. They have paid only lipservice to effective flood control in Indiana, on such rivers as the Wabash and St. Mary’s, and in their watersheds. They vote against other states when they have water problems — in turn, they can expect, and get, no help when they propose water legislation of their own. There is a close relation between Hells Canyon projects, Missouri valley projects, and the upper Wabash. Dams in Wabash county will not help Adams county in any way, and unless fast action is taken here, may do us more harm than good.
