Farm Management , Tour And Banquet Plan Annual Event On July 28 And 29 Three farms in northwestern Indiana wiß be visited on the 21st state farm management tour and banquet July 28 and 29. The first farm to be visited is the Horvath Brothers’ farm, one mile west of New Carlisle on U. S. 20 at 9 a.m., July 29. Agricultural economists from Purdue University say that a large, modern dairy operation of 47 high producing purebred Holstein cows can be observed on this 425-acre , sandy-loam farm. Alex Horvath, father of Steve and John, who operate the farm, came from Hungary to work at Studebaker in South Bend in 1910. He purchased 160 acres of the farm in 1931. In 1938 an additional 25 acres were purchased; in 1950 the addition of 240 acres brought the farm to its present size. The present dairy herd consists of 47 cows. 36 yearlings, 30 calves and three herd bulls. The only other livestock on the farm is a flock of 300 laying hens. The dairy cows are milked in a nn nrP —CA, flnnnHtv ITTvutrll oviitrcivl v ci jJvt v-»t.,7 un u barn. An average of 11,700 pounds of milk per cow was soldin 795?.Milking is done with four machine . “-w* .r*- ■’ f X-efnidnaf can-cooler system. Grass silage, chopped hay and corn silage are fed from modern, up-right silos adjacent to the dairy barn. Baled hay is stored in and fed from a large pole-type hay shed. Feeding operations are mechanized to such a degree that they can be accomplished with a minimum of effort. Chopped hay is blown into a 90ton capacity upright hay dryer. From a silo in the feed Ife silage is fed to the cows on a Lazy Susan type circular table, two feet from the ground around the base of the * silo. Storage capacity for feed is available for 350 tons of grass silage, 90 tons of corn silage, 90 tons of chopped hay, 3.000 bales of hay and 3,500 bushels of corn, plus over
’ip [ Better Eattrjl BY JEAN ALIEN ?' ~ - I ESSENTIAL FOODS The wonderful summer months can make us forget almost anything—including meal time! It’s not ‘‘how much’’ but “what” you eat that is so important for good health. Nutrition experts agree, regardless of the season, we should have certain “essential foods” daily. These foods are divided into four groups. fl'S NOT'HOhf much* gut 'WHW \° r u £4? I S. J2f.cs? Milk Group Children-—three to four cups Teenagers—four or more cups Adults—two or more cups Cheese, ice cream and other milk-made foods can supply part of the milk. Meat Group Two or more servings—beef, veal, pork, lamb, poultry, fish, eggs; as alternates—dry beans, dry peas, nuts. Vegetables and Fruits Four or more servings. Include a citrus fruit or tomato; a dark-green or deep yellow vegetable; others including potatoes. Bread and Cereal Four or more servings. Whole grain or enriched products are most desirable. Good food habits must be started early in life —they’re the best insurance for good health. Regardless of age, we never outgrow' our need for the “essential foods.” / Preparing and serving meals can be most rewarding. Let's check to see that we’ve included the valuable foods from each food group. A menu plan for a week in advance will help tq assure a well-balanced and varied menu. Frying Basket When using a wire basket for frying croquettes, don’t forget to dip it into the hot fat before putting in the croquettes, so that they will not stick to the basket when done and be difficult to remove. . Young Onions When there are more young onions on hqnd than one can use, place them in the ground, close to the kitchen door, and they will keep in perfect condition.
