He was certain to do his utmost to allay resentment reported growing among Canadians against what they believe is a U. Expert Discusses Wheat Varieties Meeting Is Held At Berne FFA Farm Gilbert Walker, extension agronomist, discussed the wheat varieties seeded fiof the demonstration and answered questions on crops at a precombine meeting held last evenings, reporta Leo N. Seltenright, county agricultural agent. The meeting was held at the Berne FFA school farm which is supervised by Eugene Sprunger, vocational agriculture teacher. In discussing the varieties. Walker explained that Vigo is being replaced by other varieties, but has been kept in the plots for comparison. Seneca is still a rather popular variety, particularly fur* ther north in Indiana, Walker explained. Dual, a rather new, flyresistant wheat, has the best record of yield of any of the varieties, reported Walker. He also reported that smut has shown up in Dual, but to date it has not been too serious. Vermillion, Walker reports, looks like the best variety to follow soybeans in this area. It responds well to late seeding, which is usually true with seeding after soybeans. Walker stated that Knox wheat spread more rapidly than any new crop variety released in Indiana. There was a build up of smut in Knox, and for that reason a sys- ' tern ofr hot-water treatment' is being worked out by the ag. alumni seed improvement association, ‘ Walker explained. LaPorte wheat, a new release, looked good in the plot, according to Walker. Expedite Acreage Reserve Payments The Indiana state ABC committee has determined that acreage reserve payments for 1958 corn, wheat and tobacco should be expedited to supply ready cash to producers in financial distres as a result of heavy rainfall or flood conditions, according to Victor Bleeke, chairman of the Adams county ASC office. The state committee feels that many farmers will wish to replant flooded crops and will need money quickly for the expenses involved. The soil bank, although in no sense an insurance program, may be able to assist in some of these distress cases. In view of the recent floods which had destroyed many crops for harvest in Indiana the state committee has instructed county officers to check performance immediately for those producers who apply at the county office and explain their needs for early payment based on flood damage. Payments to all acreage rserve participants are due within the next 60-70 days in any case, acording to Bleeke. Triplet Calves Born To Tinkham Cow Triplet calves were borrr on the Woodrow Tinkham farm, on route five, the afternoon of July 1. The multiple birth was the second calving for the cow, named Tiny. A heavy producer and a large cow in spite of the name, the animal was producing ten gallons a of milk a day before the birth of the triplets, two heifers and one bull.
