While fewer persons will be engaged in actual farming, agriculture includes many other important phases. Research, servicing, marketing, and processing of farm products require many, many persons with a farm background. A college of agriculture must help the student choose which field he is best suited for, and then train him for that field. In Arkansas the Farm Bureau is the largest farm organization, and there is also a Farmers Union and Grange. There are hundreds of cooperatives, both farm electrical. Arkansas used to be “heavy” in plant agriculture, depending mostly on cotton, rice and soybeans Now broilers, beef, hogs, sheep, and even dairy cattle are expanding. The state is one of the largest producers of rice in the country. Land grant colleges and companies like Central Soya have many things in common, it was pointed out. The college trains manpower which the company uses. Many of the Central Soya personnel had earned their degrees with the professors, and their work was well known to each other. Siniilar research is carried on, and each is interested in the other’s experiments.*Both are serving the same public*. "D. •W. McMillen, founder of the company, was highly praised by the .professors for his contribution to industry and education’s aim of working together for a common solution to problems. Visiting professors included, in addition to Drs. Ellis and Hudson, Dr. E. L. Stephenson, professor of animal nutrition; Dr. P. B. Noland, associate professor of animal husbandry; Dr. K. W. Scott, assistant professor in animal husbandry; Dr. D. A. Hinkle, head of the department of agronomy; Dr. O. T. Stallcup, professor of dairy husbandry; C. E. Caviness, instructor in junior agronomy; and Charles Hughes, instructor in junior agronomy. Central Soya officials who were hosts for the group during their visit in Decatur included Dr. J. L. Krider. vice president and director of public relations; Watson Maddox, associate in sales trqining; Robert R. Chappius, personnel director of the Decatur plant; Endre Sipos, chief development chemist: Dr. Cravens, Dr. Leo V. Curtin, assistant director of feed research and nutrition; Dr. James R. Allen, director of field service; Weldon L. Soldner, associate director of feed research; G. Richard Childs, poultry research specialist, and J. Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
(Editor's note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you migi)t have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) 1. I -am a farmer and receiving social security checks. I didn't think I would make expenses this year. However, my crops are do ing better than I had expected, I will clear well over SI2OO for the year. Should I notify the social security office now that I expect to clear more than the limit of $1200? Yes. you should. Like many other retired farmers you will have total farm earnings this year in excess of the amount you are permitted if you are to receive your social security checks for all months. You should report to your social security office. Tell them that your earings are going to exceed the SI2OO limit for this year. Ypur checks will then be stopped. At the end of the year you will be asked to submit a report showing how much your earnings actually were and adjustments will be made at that time. Jf any checks for this year are still due you, you will get them. 2.1 injured my le« aoout two years ago and was unable to work for about 18 months. Should I have my wages frozen for the period of time I was unable to work because of this injury? If your disability was temporary and you returned to work or expect to work again, you cannot qualifty for either the disability freeze or disability benefits. Only individuals with disabilities that prevent substantial gainful employment and which are expected to last indefinitely can qualify for the . disability freeze or for disability insurance. 3. I am divorced and have my 14 year old child living with me. My former husband passed away. Can I get social security payments? I am under 62 years.

You may receive a mother’s benefit based on the earnings record of your former husband if you meet the following requirements: 1. Your former husband was fully or currently insured. 2. You have not remarried. 3. You have in your care an former husband. 4. At the time of his death, your unmarried 1 child under 18 of your husband was contributing at least one half of your support by virtue of an agreement or a formal courtorder. 5. You are the child’s natural or adopting mother. 6. You must file an application for benefits. In any event, your child probably can receive benefits based on your former husband’s account, whether or not you are entitled. 4. I am a widow and receiving monthly social security checks for myself and three children. How long will I keep getting my checks? So long as the children are under 18 and in your care you will continue to receive monthly checks for yourself and the children. If you should remarry your checks stop but the children will continue to receive theirs until each reaches age 18. If you or any of the children go to work and earn over. SI2OO per year, benefits for that member *t>f the farfily are not payable for any month in which earnings exceed SBO. If you have not remarried, widow’s benefits become payable to you at age 62. 5. My husband is receiving monthly social security payments. I understand that I can apply when I am 62 this November and receive wife’s benefits but that they will be smaller than if I wait until I am 65. Would I be ahead to apply when I am 62 or wait until I am 65? It is true that the amount payable to you on your husband’s wage record will be reduced' if you apply for wife’s benefits between the age of 62 and 65. The amount of the reduction depends on the number of months between the
time payments start and the time you reach 65. This reduction is permanent and would amount to 25% if you apply at age 62. It would be less if you wait until you are nearer 65. If you choose the reduced benefit at any age between 62 and 65, you will be ahead for the first 12 years. However, if you receive wife’s benefits at , the reduced rate for more than J 12 years, the total amount you re- ‘ ceive will not be as large as if ; you had waited until age 65 for \ the higher benefit The decision ; is yours. i ‘ piane Varsi. pictured above, gives a sensational performance as Lana Turner’s daughter in “Peyton Place,” the tremendous Technicolor production playing at the Drive-in theater Sunday, Monday and Tuesday,.
