Further plans for flood control and eliminating much of the high water will be discussed, among these is further cleaning of the Salamonie river. According to the Portland Commerical-Review, “The partial cleaning out of the Salamonie river down to old 67 highway bridge saved Portland from the worst flood in its history. The complete cleaning out the Salamonie .from the Ohio line to the Blackford county line will save the farmers in Jay county millions of dollars in crop losses each year.” REPUBLICANS (Continued from page one) Ike "Needs” Adams The Chief Executive defended Adams at a news conference Wednesday. He said that while he may have been imprudent in dealing with Goldfine he was a man of unquestioned integrity and “I need him.” In Boston, millionaire Goldfine was quoted as saying he was willing to testify before the House investigators* He said he had done nothing wrong and would answer all their questions. Adams acknowledged making a scries of telephone calls to the Federal Trade Commission and Securities & Exchange Commission in behalf of Goldfin&, but insisted he sought only information on pending charges against his long-time friend. Adams denied trying to influence anybody although he admitted he should have been “more prudent.” MOGILNER (Continued from page one) it “probably” occurred the day after they arrived, instead of the same day. Rocap was trying to discredit five “days of Mogilner testimony, including a claim that one defendant implied he had the support of Craig in pushing the deals that brought the charges. PlKup 2nd pgh: Mogilner, the RUSSIA (Continued from page one) demonstrations and strengthened the border guard to prevent further flights from Hungary. Predict More Rain Tonight, Friday Light drizzle that began in Decatur this forenoon did not reach any measurable amount by this noon, according to government weather observer Lewis Landrum. More rain was predicted for later today and Friday, according to weather forecasts this noon. Since yesterday the St. Mary’s river receded rapidly below the 13foot flood stage, to 10.75 feet, evidence that the .38 inch of rainfall in the city Tuesday night had little effect upon the river level itself. However, the showers are keeping the land frdjn drying off and are soaking the newly-cut hay on area farms. Norman R. Clauser Is Taken By Death Norman Robert Clauser, 64, Fort Wayne, died Wednesday at the Lutheran hospital. He was a member of the First Missionary church and a machinist at International Harvester for 25 years. Surviving are his wife, Anna M.; two daughters, Mrs. Don Gentis and Mrs. Harry Von Gunten, both of Fort Wayne; a sister, Mrs. Arley Wulliman, Fort Wayne, and three brothers, Warren of St. Joe, and Myron and Alfred, both of Berne. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Missionary church in Fort Wayne. Friends may call at the D. O. McComb & Sons funeral home until noon Friday. Farms Storage Loans Are Again Available Farm storage facility loans are available again this year to help farmers obtain more on-farm storage, Victor Bleeke, chairman of the Adams county agricultural stabilization and conservation committee said today. Five ’year, four per cent loans are made to finance up to 80 per cent of the cost of storage for wheat, corn, oats, rye, barley, soybeans, and grain sorghums. In addition to storage facility loans, funds are available to finance mobile equipment for grain conditioning. In this latter program, the farmer may borrow up to 75 per cent of the delivered and assembled cost—exclusive of labor—of mobile dryers, air circulators. ventilators, tunnels, and fans. These loans are for three years with interest at four per cent. Additional information is available at the county office. MAID (Continued from page one) the Reitmans were attending a dance. Joel and the maid disappeared. He was found in Ottawa where taxi driver Edward Royer said a woman passenger had asked him to find a baby sitter for the boy while she shopped. Mrs. Goede maintained Wednesday she had been impersonated in Montreal and denied she was the woman employed by the Reitmans. HEAAT (Continued from page one) year’s harvest. Market observers have estimated wheat will be in sufficient supply to bring cash prices crashing down if there is no support level to stop them. Eight Arrested In Safe-Stealing Ring Raids Are Reported From 14 Counties NEW CASTLE, Ind. UPD—Police revealed today the arrest of eight men accused of being members of a safe-stealing burglary ring which made forays into at least 14 counties and got $50,000 loot in the last six months. Six men were arrested early this morning at New Castle and near Rushville, and two others were arrested previously. A ninth alleged member of the ring was sought. Lt. Robert F. Dillon of the Indiana State Police said the ring operated widely since the first of the year, possibly robbing safes in 25 Indiana counties and some in Ohio. Members were New Castle factory workers, some of whom lost their jobs in layoffs during the current recession, police said. They concentrated on rural grain elevators and farm supply stores and usually hauled the safes away and broke them open along country roads, leaving the empty safes lying in the roads. Ring members were caught, police said, because of red paint chips on many of the stolen safes. The paint was linked to a fireengine red car belonging to one of the arrested men. Burglaries blamed on the ring occurred in Union, Fayette, Wayne, Henry, • Randolph, Jay, Delaware, Blackford, Grant, Madison, Hamilton, Tipton, Tippecanoe and Kosciusko Counties. Held in Tipton County Jail at Tipton were Gail Duncan, 21, and his brother, Jackie, 23. Held in Henry County Jail at New Castle were Cecil R. Bell. 32, his brother Joseph, 35, Roy L. Manis, 25, Kenneth Burnett, 31, William E. Catron, 26, and William L. Blackburn, 27. Sought was Blackburn's brother, James, 37. Authorities said one of the stolen safes weighed at least 1,200 pounds. The safes, police said, were hauled away in .the trunk of Gail Duncan’s red car. Three of the men signed confessions linking the other six. Arrests were made by State Police, Henry and Tipton County sheriff's officers and Rushville, Connersville and New Castle city police. Gehrardt Lehman Is Slightly Improved The condition of Gerhardt Lehman, Berne, is reported to be slightly, improved, according to attendants at the Adams county memorial hospital.
