Committee In House Works On Farm Bill Continue Voting On Catch-All Farm Bill WASHINGTON (UPI) — The House Agriculture Committee went behind closed doors again today to continue voting on a 62page catch-all farm bill, much of which the administration opposes. The comm ittee 'voted 20-13 Wednesday to force the Agriculture Department to jack up its nearly dormant program for bartering U.S. farm surpluses abroad. The committee also approved overwhelmingly an administration backed plea for a one-year extension of the surplus disposal program. It voted to authorize sale of an additional $1,500,000,000 in farm surpluses for foreign currencies. The administration had proposed a one-billion-dollar program.

The committee overrode Repub- ; lican protests and voted to direct 1 the department to remove restric- ' ions which have sharply limited ' the barter program in the past ' year. | Traders wishing to barter farm < surpluses with certain countries ] now are required to get acer- 1 tificate from the foreign govern- J ment stating that the shipment of 1 the surpluses would not replace ] U.S. dollar sales of farm com- , modifies. Before these restrictions were 1 imposed the barter program was | one of the chief grounds for Can- 1 ada’s complaints that the United j States was competing unfairly for ( foreign markets for wheat. ' The Senate has passed separate 11 legislation authorizing a two-year ] three-billion-dollar extension of the 1 disposal program. But the Senate ] rejected a proposal to revive , bartering. ] If you have something to sell or 1 rooms tor rent, try a Democrat | Want Ad — They bring results. '
