Rise In Employment t Reported For May Personal Income In May Also Increased WASHINGTON (UPI) -4 The government reported Wednesday employment rose last month for the first time since last summer—another sign the recession may have hit bottom. At the same time, the Commerce Department announced personal income in May was coming in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $344,500,000,000. about one billion dollars better than April. Government economists said the most encouraging feature of the increase was that 750 million dollars of it came from a rise in wages and salaries, bringing them to annual rate of nearly 234 billion dollars. In addition to wages and salaries, personal income includes farm income, rents, interest, stock dividends, unemployment compensation, veterans benefits, and government and private pensions. , A big share of the May increase in personal income was due to a sharp rise in government payments for jobless benefits, veterans and old age pensions. on the economy and using the information to compile campaign material for GOP speakers who run into Democratic criticism about the recession. * They can point to such other recent signs of economic improvement as a drop in unemployment from 5,120,000 to 4,904,000 between April and May and a pickup in retail trade in the last two months.Despite last month’s rise in wage and salary totals, the figures still were lagging behind a year ago. The 1958 rate, hfter seasonal adjustments, was $233,900.000,000 compared with $238,300,000,000 in May, 1957. However, this was an increase over the $233,200,000,000 resistered for April of this year.
