Macmillan Meets Canadian Officials Concludes Talks With Ike Wednesday OTTAWA, Ont. (UPD-British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan met with Canadian officials today to continue talks on international relations he started during his three-day conference in Washington. Macmillan flew here from Washington Wednesday night. Topics he was expected to cover in his talks with Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and External Affairs Minister Sidney Smith most likely would be commonwealth economic and trade relations, disarmament and prospects for a summit conference. He said before leaving Washington that he and President Eisenhower were “fairly close" to an agreement on terms for a summit
conference with the Soviets but that neither wanted a meeting “that is a farce.’. Macmillan said that be and the President would not agree to a summit conference unless it had a reasonable chance of success. He said a face-to-face meeting with the Russians may be profitable if it can “achieve small decisions, some form of move in disarmament." He made the statement in a speech to the'National Press Club in Washington and it was his main public statement during his trip to conduct informal talks with United States leaders.
