A flood control program would greatly ease thejflooding danger in the Wabash rivershed. W’ould this be expensive to the farmers and taxpayers in the area? At one time it would have been very expensive. For this reason, in a hard-fought legal case, dredging was defeated. But now, money is available for the program through federal help. This money has already been appropriated by Congress, and raised by taxes. If Adams county does not take advantage of it, other areas will. The 23,000 citizens of this county, who have paid in taxes for the nation-wide program will get no return for their money if they do not ask for the aid. The aid is now available through the small watersheds act. The U. S. soil conservation service, with an office in Decatur, has all the information necessary for the 'program. But the SCS cannot itself ask the government for help. Local people, either a clftb, farm organization, or busiorganization m u s | xlart the action. Tuesday one farmer in Jefferson township showed us his “field.” He had tiled this field last summer, after waiting two months for it to dry. The tile entered the Wabash river at the edge of the field. The tile was six feet below the edge of the bank. Today that tile was 12 feet under flood water. , What can flood control do? The Amstutz-Long dike and pump station is an example. Here a flood plain of 600 acres has been protected by a retaining dike to keep the high water from t h e Wabash from entering it. A pump to force the water from the lower plain has been installed. This 1 pumps thousands of gallons of water a minute, fnstead of the entire plain being under water, as it used to be, Tuesday only 150 acres were still covered with water. Much water remained, of Announce new way in 1958 to Shrink Painful Piles and Itching by using . . . B.C.E. PREPARATION Your Druggist has it. Registered in ILS. Patent Office.

course, but it wquld be pumped off in time for a second planting where necessary. When ditches and streambeds are properly dredged, so thet the bed drops evenly toward the outlet, water is let off the land at a fast, even rate, with little damage. But when the bed is uneven, slowing down the flow of water, the water backs up over valuable cropland. Several farmers have proved this to themselves by correct dredging. TORNADO (Continued from Page one) Basements were floo d e d and many families were forced to evacuate their hemes. Sixty-mile per hour winds toppled a 60-foot tall smokestack in Effingham, 111., and random .reports of twisters inflated farm losses in lowa, and Ohio. INDIANA (Continued from Page one) counties. Thousands of acres of crops were ruined or damaged by standing water and rushing floods. A spokesman for tomato growers said nearly 7,000 acres of tomato plants have been washed out. Other crop experts said heavy damage was expected to soybean and corn crops. Some estimates placed at 5,000 the number of persons evacuated from lowland homes or facing evacuation if streams reached the crests the river observers said they would. New rains late Tuesday and early today came from storms less violent than earlier in the four-day splurge of weather extremes. But residents of West. Central Indiana, particularly around Terre Haute, were warned Tuesday afternoon of the possibility of tornadoes. Large hailstones fell, winds blew strong, lightning bolts bombarded the countryside and heavy rain fell as the storm area moved a little farther south than it had earlier. Wabash At 23«4 Feet At Lafayette, the Wabash climbed to feet this morning, 11 feet above flood stage. A crest of 25 feet was due Thursday. Covington expected the stream would crest there at 27 to 28 feet compared to a flood stage of 16. The White River also spilled upward and headed for crests well above flood stage at Noblesville, Muncie and Spencer. Rain during the last 24 hours included 5.20 inches at Covington, 2.57 at Zionsville, 2.74 at Crawfordsville, 2.4 at Terre Haute, 2.24 at Indianapolis and nearly

two inches at many other points including Winchester, Shelbyville, Seymour, Noblesville, Bloomington. State Police Supt. Harold Zeis, whose troopers worked overtime on flood duty, helped rescue a family of seven by helicopter from the Jack Garrett farm at Ridgeville. Two streams furnished hazards for Delphi residents. At least 25 families were rescued from the banks of Wildcat Creek and 15,000 sandbags were sent from Indianapolis to tame Deer Creek. Lightning killed 12 registered cattle on the Lawrence Wagner farm near. Auburn. Cooler weather was due, and the outlook for the five days ending next Monday called for temperatures average 2 to 4 degrees below normal. More significant than temperatures, however, was the rainfall outlook—l to 2 inches in thundershowers from Friday through Sunday. But at Indianapolis, the weatherman interrupted his flood forecasts long enough to note that precipitation in the capital ciy for the year thus far is deficient by more than five inches. SCOUT (Continued from Fage one) Berne troop has reported four days and nights completed. Biberstein pointed out that every scout did not have to attend, but that if it were available for him then it could be counted. The camporees and Big Island also count, he stated. A new Anthony Wayne scout headquarters will be opened this fall, it is hoped, with more room for office work. The proposed site is located outside of the downtown area in Fort Wayne. NEARLY (Co nll n ued from Page one) lough farm in St. Mary's township. In French township, the Harold Moser farm received 4.3 inches of rain. The 6.1 inches was reported from the Ben Mazelin farm in Monroe township. ft ln Hartford township, a report from the Ivan Huser farm confirmed that the 5 inches received there had brought the Wabash out of its banks. In Jefferson township. 4.8 inches fell at the Harley Reef farm. More than 10 per cent of all electricity sold in the U. S. was sold in the Tennessee Valley area last year.
