Indiana State Fair To Salute Science State Fair Queen Is New Highlight The 1958 Indiana state fair, scheduled from August 27 through Sptember 4, will open this year with a salute to science as part of the fair's theme, “Science in Action.” Fair board officials, headed by president John A. Craft of LaPorte, selected the science theme as part of the international geophysical year in keeping with the top news of the past year. A new highlight of this year’s spectacular will be selection of a state fair queen of the eve of the official opening day of the fair. Queens from some 35 Hoosier county fairs will vie for this top title. The queen will reign as official hostess for the nine-day affair. This year visitors will also see the opening of the manufacturers building annex as a new international building, which will house exhibits from several foreign and Pan-American countries. As part of this new phase of the fair, representatives from nearly 30 foreign countries will be invited as guests of the fair on September 3. This particular day will be known as “International Day.” Representative teachers from the 92 cotin again take part in teachers* day August 29. A selected teacher will be awarded a choice vacation for the Christmas holidays. August 28, over 100 top Indiana parade in front of the grandstand high school bands are expected to as a highlight of high school band day. Plans are under way to invite officials of new industries which have opened during the past year to see the Hoosier evtravaganza as part of business and industry day September 1. Other special days include youth achievement day August 30, which will honor leading rural and urban. Sunday will again be observed as church and veterans day with September 2 being designated as governor’s and legislators* day. The fair will close September 4 with farmers’ and farm organizations’ day. This will be the 106th Indiana state fair. Speed Production Os U.S. Missiles Ballistic Missiles To European Sites WASHINGTON (UPI) — The defense department today moved at top speed to produce and dispatch to European launching sites this country’s first long range ballistic missiles—the Jupiter and Thor. Defense officials said a decision had been made for “full scale production” of both the 11500 - mile weapons to arm Air Force squadrons in Britain and On the European continent by the end of the year. The United States, they said, is putting its “heaviest bet” on the 1,500 - mile Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) to match a possible Russian lead in 5,000-mile Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM's). The Air Force's Atlas and Titan ICBM’S are at least a year away from usefulness. Since Western European allied nations are within easy IRBM range of the Soviet Union, the 1,500 - mile American weapon serves much the same purpose as any Russian capability to launch ICBM’s from Soviet bases against the United States. By the 1 end of this year the first Air Force Thor squadron is scheduled to become operational in England and the first Jupiter squadron is a yet-unannounced launching site on the European continent. Each squadron will be armed with 15 of the deadly nuclear weapons.
