Close Games Mark Play In Little League Two close battles, one an extrainning contest, featured Wednesday Hight’s Little League double header at Worthman field. The Indians defeated the Red Sox, 8-6, in eight innings in the opener, and the White Sox edged the Tigers, 6-5, in the nightcap, limited to five innings by the league curfew. The Red Ssox opened up an early lead with three runs in the first inning on a walk to Tom Davidson, a single by Gary Sheets, Ronnie Rowland’s double and an error. The Indians scored one in the second when Sam Blythe singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Another Indian run tallied in the fourth when 1 Ed Kohne tripled and scored on an error. The Indians took the lead with a pair in the sixth on a walk to Jim Ford, Kohne’s double and a wild pitch. But the Red Sox tied the score in the last of the sixth. Dave Pierce and Lynn Sheets were safe on consecutive errors,, and walks to Davidson and Gary Sheets forced in the tying run. Both teams scored twice in the seventh, the Indians on two walks and Kohne’s double, the Red Sox on hits by Rowland and Pierce, plus an error. TJhe Indians scored two more in the eighth for the victory on hits by Terry Stultz and Roger Landrum and a hit batter. In the nightcap, another seesaw affair, the White Sox scored in all but one inning. The winners scored one in the first on a walk to Jerry Egley, who scored by stealing home. One counted in the second on three walks and a wild pitch, and three counted in the third on two walks, a hit batsman and Max EHiott's triple. The winner came in the bottom of the fifth on a double by Ed Minch, a single by Elliott, and an error. The Tigers scored one in the For Athletes Foot Use T-4-L for 3 to 5 days. Podres Hurls 4th Victory In Coliseum By FRED DOWN United Press International Johnny Podres undoubtedly wishes Walter O'Malley luck with his Chavez Ravine stadium of the future but for the present he’d be happy if the Los Angeles Dodgers never left the Coliseum. Because the stylish 25-year old left-hander is one pitcher for whom the “famous fence”- holds no terrors. He owns a perfect 4-0 record in the Coliseum compared to a 1-4 mark on the road this season. The Wor d Sdties hero of 1955 made it a great day for the Dodgers on two counts Wednesday night when he hurled a. threehit, 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Redlegs. It was the third win in four games for the Dodgers, now only a game and a half from the seventh-place Philadelphia Phillies. Charlie Neal tripled home the Dodgers' first run off Johnny Klippstein in the second inning and then smashed his ninth homer of the year — seventh in the Coliseum—in the fourth. Braves Win The Milwaukee Braves took a one-game grip on first place •when they beat the slumping San Francisco Giants, 10-9, on Warren Spahn’s llth-inning pinch single; Ernie Banks drove in four runs with two homers and a single as the Cubs clouted the Philljes, 11-5, and Stan Musial had three hits in the St. Louis Cardinals’. 6-3 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the American League, ,the Chicago White Sox braked the New York Yankees, 7-2, the Cleveland Indians rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox. 7-5, Mike Baxes’ four hits enabled the Kan- ) sas City A s to shade the Washington Senators, 5-4, and the Ba - timore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-4. Spahn’s pinch single broke up a three-hour and 35-minute battle of six homers in which the Giants frittered away an early 7-1 lead. A three-run ninth-inning homer by I Wes Covington tied it for the i Braves at 7-7 but then pirich-hit-{ters Hank Sauer and Bob Schmidt (homered with two out in the [Giant 10th for a 9-9 tie. j Banks, who has hit seven homi ers and is batting .533 over the last seven games paced an 18-hit Cub attack which also included jthree hits each by Lee Walls arid tDale Long. Moe Drabowsky went ", the distance for his third win while Robin Roberts lost his sixth game. j Musial lifted his average to .437 with a homer and two singles and rookie Gene Green also had three hits for the Cardinals, who handed the Pirates their eighth loss ■in 11 games. Frank Thomas had I there hits, including his 14th homer, for Pittsburgh. White Sox Win I The White Sox snapped a string 'of 32 consecutive scoreless in- ' nings and three straight losses as [ Billy Pierce yielded only five hits j and struck out six. • I Billy Harell's two-run homer : was the big blow of a four-run ; 10th inning outburst that enabled the Indians to end a four-game losing streak. Relief pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm picked up his second win. Baxes hit safely in three scor- ■ ing innings as the Athletics halted the Senators’ four-ganie winning skein. : , Gus Triandos hit a two-run homer in ’the seventh as the oles beat the Tigers for the sjxth straight time aimLdropped them into the cellar.
