Slock Marl Average Shows Sharp Upturn Average Is Highest Since September 19. NEW YORK (UPD—The stock market has risen by 20 billion dollars from its lows of the year set in February for industrial shares and in the first session of the year for the other major groups. And this sharp upturn which has carried the general average back to a new high ’ last Sept. 19 has been accompanied by doep cuts in corporation earnings, a new high for a decade in unemployment, and myriad dividend cuts. This performance fits into the scheme of things marketwise, for the market is supposed to discount the future. The problem confronting Wall Street just now is whether or not the discounting process has been overdone. Each time the market wavers some new spur comes along to send it into a new rise. Tuesday, for example, it wavered in the late trading only to make a swift comeback with the railroad shares leading. Rails were helped by word that Sen. George A. Smathers (D-Fla.l had lined up a near Senate majority in favor of repeal of transportation excise taxes. A few days ago the steel shares ran up to new highs on news the industry had stepped up its operations to a new high since Dec. 16. Oil shares rose when statistics showed a reduction in gasoline inventories that had been plaguing that industry. Construction figures have helped the building and allied shares, and th market generally. They showed a good rise in April with home construction improving. Heavy construction has made the best showing since < 1956. The tire industry had good stews in bigger demand for replacement tires. Utility earnings have been rising steadily. Retail trade and consumer industries generally have held well. Railroads, despite a sharp drop in earnings, have made the best showing of any major grpup. Their rise from the year’s low to today has been 17 per cent. Utilities have risen 14 per cent and industrials 7 per cent. These wide gains are said to be in anticipation of a much rise in industrial output than many of the business experts had predicted. Hence the belief in some quarters of excess in the market’s appraisal of the future. Higher commissi<jns, plus more business, plus more economical operations has brought prosperity •to Wall Street which last year suffered a depression of its own long before business felt the brunt of the recession. Annual Peony Festival At Van Wert June 11 Thousands are expected to attend the annual peony festival at Van Wert, 0.. next Wednesday. Parades will start at 2 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. at the court house. Hartford Center will be the only Adorns county band among the 42 entered in the grand parades. Willshire will also be represented. Rather Warm Spell Envelops Indiana Temperature Above Normal Expected By United Press International A "rather warm’’ spell envelops Indiana today for what may be the longest visit of the season. Temperatures around 80 in the . state’s midsection, in the low 80s i south and the high 70s north were expected this afternoon to usher in a period of at least five days of above normal readings extend- . ing into next week. Highs in the low and middle 80s were due Thursday and probably : will continue from Friday through next Monday except for a brief I period of cooling in the north Friday. The five-day outlook called for i temperatures averaging 4 to 8 de- ; grees above normal highs of 75 to 85 and normal lows of 55 to 66. i This might mean the season’s first 90-degree readings, at Iqast in the 1 south portion, before the week is over. Temperatures crested between 69 at Indianapolis and 75 at Evi ansville Tuesday and dropped to i the low 50s during the night. Lows tonight will range from 60 to 65. Forecasts called, for the chance of scattered thundershowers Thursday. Tbe five-day outlook inI dicated precipitation will average .50 to .75 of an inch in the extreme north and less than .50 in ! the south Thursday or Friday and : again around Sunday or Monday. Handley Policies Scored By Hartke Republican State Leadership Lashed SALEM, Ind. <UPI>— Evansville Mayor Vance Hartke Tuesday night said Democrats may yet give Indiana’s economy a shot in the arm in spite of the Republican leadership. The leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U. S. Senate told fellow party members "time and again Governor ‘High-Tax’ Harold Handley has refused to call a special session of the Legislature to deal with the misery and hardship caused by this Republican recession.” He said in this respect, Handley allowed Indiana to “fall far behind the other states.” Hartke said in contrast. Democrats in Congress have succeeded in forcing through a relief measure. "The aid bill would have been even better if the Republicans hadn’t tried to cut it up," he said. “However, the bill which did pass could extend benefits for Hoosier unemployed for additional weeks.” Hartke said it appears that a special session of the Legislature "will be necessary” if the attorney general rules that Indiana can accept a federal grant. "Why do our Republican leaders have to be pushed so hard so often to get them to do something about our needy citizens?” he asked. He said the only answer “to this sorry mess which the Republicans have made is a return to sound Democratic management of our governmental affairs.” TIME TO STORE YOUR FURS In Our Modem VAULT KELLY DRY CLEANING 427 N. 9th St. PHONE 3-3202
