Man Is Suffocated When Bed Is Burned BEDFORD, Ind. (UPD—Eugene Cauble, 28, who was recently discharged from the Navy after nine years of service, suffocated Saturday when his bed burned in the home of his grandmother at Mitchell. Authorities said the fire at the Lawrence County home of Mrs. Maude Cauble apparently started when Cauble went to sleep with a cigarette in his hand. Mrs. Cauble was awakened by the smoke and put out the fire with a bucket of water. CARDINAL (Continued from Page one) celebrations were planned for the 48th anniversary of his ordination as a priest last week. An audience with Pope Pius XII also was schduled. But the cardinal suffered a cerebral stroke last Monday and after a brief rallying period began to go down hill by the end of the week. Stritch was summoned to Rome by the Pope to help Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi run the church's worldwide missionary work. The Italian cardinal is prefect of the sacred congregation. LOTS OF FAT IN MEAT UNION— Fred Cornelius (left) of Hicksville, N.Y., tells the Senate rackets subcommittee in Washington that he participated in forging of hundreds of membership cards in 1952 to bring the AAP clerks into the Butchers and Meat Cutters union in the New York area, and that more than >200,000 in pension annuities were voted for two union officials without knowledge of the membership. Cornelius was the union’s business agent William Casale (right), testifying later, disputes Cornelius’ testimony on the membership cards. (International SoundpHotosj

Recession Cutting Road-Building Cost Bids Well Below State Estimates INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — State highway officials indicated today the economic recession is cutting the cost of building Indiana roads. They read the cost of the 1958 program may reach $149,000,000, including extra millions made available because bids are running 12% to 15 per cent below engineers’ estimates of the cost. Highway Commissioner Eugene Bodine told a news conference one reason bids were low is the reduced cost of steel and other material's paid by the contractors. In past years, bids averaged about 10 per cent below engineers

estimates, officials said, but the recession has allowed contractors to make lower bids. Highway Chairman John Peters said the previously announced 120 million dollar 1958 program should total 159 million instead. He said contracts have been received for 60 million dollars worth of work so far this year and a 90 million dollar total will be reached by July 1. Executive Director George Foster said the 1959 program should total 120 to 130 millions. FRENCH (Continued trtwn Page one) the movement in Algeria might have - helped towards a national resurgence. But the role initialy played by the authorities in Algeria has now been distorted.” Pflimlin reserved his bitterest comments for events in rebel-held Corsica. “It would b vain,” he said, “to disguise the gravity of the events in Corsica. The popular movement in Algeria might to a certain degree, despite the excesss committed and the political exploitation that has been made of it, be explained by the emotion of our , fellow countrymen who want to remain Frenchmen . . . “No Excuse Can Be Made” “But for the events in Corsica, there is absolutely no justification and no excuse can be made•’’ BOMB (Continued from Page one) in Beirut, showered the crowded street with glass from apartment windows for 100 yards on either side of the trolley. The Cabinet crisis was coupled with reports of a worsening military situation for the government both north and south of the capital. A dispatch from Nicosia said British troops on Cyprus were alerted to be ready to fly to Lebanon at a moment’s notice should British property or citizens be jeopardized. Bitter street fighting between insurgents and army troops broke out in the ancient Phoenician seaport of Sidon, 35 miles to the south, Sunday. Beirut radio reported Sunday night that the army had fought for hours in the streets of Halba. 12 miles northeast of the northern port city of Tripoli, to wrest control of the city from the insurgents. Sidon is the western terminus of ' the Trans-Arabian pipeline which delivers the flow of Aramco’s Saudi Arabian oil to Mediterranean ships. Opposition sources reported four persons killed and 12 wounded. Two of the dead and two wounded were government troops, they said. 8 :
