i Annual Convention Os PTA Opened National Congress * Meeting In Omaha OMAHA (tIP)-The 62nd annual convention of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers I picks up steam today with the ! initial business session and a symi posium on “the changing social scene in America.” “Mature minds for a mature America” is the theme of this year's convention. About 1,000 delegates were in attendance. ,The very Rev. Paul C. Reinert, S. J., president of St. Louis University, told the opening meeting Sunday night that educators and parents must develop “conditions for wise decision-making” in the minds of American boys and girls. The four marks of a mature mind are moral responsibility, courage and effort, orderly thinking • habits and comprehensive knowledge, he said. He stressed the shaping of morally responsible youngsters as a duty of parents which “cannot be delegated to someone else.” But he said since such a characteristic is “as much caught as it is taught,” the teacher “must always and obviously be morally responsible.” Father Reinert told a news conference one of the reasons there was a critical shortage of competent teachers was that “parents are actually dissuading children who want to teach from entering the field" because teaching as a profession is “losing prestige.” A negative attitude toward teachers plus the lack of adequate pay are at the bottom of the botom of the problem, he said. Mrs. Rollin Brown, Los Angeles, Calif., president of the national congress, said it is of prime concern to the PTA “to get qualified people into the teaching profession in the first place and then improve their working conditions ; and salaries.” * 1 Cal E. Peterson, Miss Elizabeth Peterson and Mrs. Grace Allwein motored to Indianapolis today to visit their brother, Tom Peterson, who is a patient at Methodist hospital there.
