Moses had just reviewed for the Israelites the great code of the Ten Commandments delivered to him on Mt. Sinai. In this lesson, he charges the people with their responsibility of observing these laws if they wish to become a strohg nation, and the penalties for non-compliance with the laws as set forth. The people were within sight of the Promised Land when Moses -gave them this final charge. ‘ . V.l. “Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgements, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:" Moses is calling upon the Isratlies to study, learn and obey the Commandments that they may live long and well in the Promised Lnad. t * thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged." “Fear of the Lord" refers to the reverence and awe one should feel toward God, not a sense of terror. Likewise, sacred ordinances should be held in high respect and observed diligently. Reverence for God and regard for moral law always tend to give peace of mind, health of body and consequently long life. Family religion should be practiced. V. 3. “Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey." This verse emphasizes again that the well-being and prosperity of the nation will depend upon their faithful observence of God’s laws. V. 18. “Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and blind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.” The words "lay up” mean memorize and this admonition implies that the world is full of distractions and one is prone to lose sight of the guiding principles of life, so they must be kept continually in front of the eyes. The ancient Jew put a band about his forehead, to which was attached a little box containing Scripture verses as a constant reminder. V. 19. “And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Parents are to seek time and opportunity to teach their children God's ways and to influence them to obey God's laws. The Jews implanted religious faith in their children very diligently, which has had .much to do with their having been able to endure persecution through the centuries. Vs. 20, 21, “And thou Shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: . „ . That your days may be. multiplied .and the days of your chil“ dren, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give 1 them, as the days of heaven upon the earth." SATURDAY, MAY it,
comrades on the rubber raft would not have survived with sanity if God had not been on the raft with them, drawing them closer together in the deepest bonds of mutual friendship. Pastor Niemoller gave a similar testimony to the importance of God’s nearness when asked how he endured his four years of solitary confinement during the war. He said, “I never once felt that I was alone. I always felt that God was there. Abd because of His presence I felt in contact with all other men and women, everywhere.” When people feel the nearness of God, they have a closer feeling with others. The church is the house of God where we can best feel His nearness. Why not accept the invitation and come to church next Sunday? Go To Phil L. Macklin & Co.
