Four Boys Killed By Avalanche Os Salt Four Detroit Boys Killed Wednesday DETROIT (to — An avalanche of salt killed four boys who were < "playing in a railroad hopper car i Wednesday. , K ; The victims, all from Detroit, 3 were Norman Clatterbuck, 13; 1 Ricky Contardi, 12: Jimmy Heal- 3 ty, 13, and David Lachapelle, 11. i Police said two other boys, 1 Danny Lawyer, 11, and Robert Fisher, 11, were playing with the < four in the yaras of the Interna- ' tional Salt Co. Railroad hoppers full of salt stood on the sidings. One boy tripped a lever on a car, sending the salt pouring from the hopper ’ in the car bottom. Four of the boys decided to sit ; atop another car load of salt while the other two released the lever with a heavy wooden plank. The four became stuck in the out- ' let and were buried under an estimated 60 tons of salt. Danny ahd Robert ran to a nearby bowling alley, screaming for help. About 40 bowlers dug the boys out with their bare hands, but found they were dead. ACTIVITESS (Continued from Page one) be held. Friday the senior class will meet for the final time in room 300 at 12:30 p.m. The student body will assemble on the north side of the gym at 1:15 p.m., and at 1:30 the report cards will be distributed. MATHEWS ( (Continued from P>ye one) inond by an 11-9 margin. Mrs. Lois Johnson of Muncie was reelected vice chairman when Davis cast the deciding vote to break a 10-10 tie. HOUSE (Continued from Page one) long-time Commrinist who had been active in party work- in the United States. Postal: A Senate-House conference committee openly dared a Presidential veto by agreeing on a compromise bill coupling a 530 million dollar postal rate increase with a 257 million dollar postal employe pay boost. The full 1 House and Senate must approve 1 the measure before it goes to the White House, where President Eisenhower .already has expressed his disapproval of tying the two fatures together. Chairman Olin D. Johnston (D-SC.) of the Senate Post Office Committee warned the President that if the bill is vetoed, no postal increase will be forthcoming this year. Civil Rights: The Senate confirmed, 67 to 13. the nomination of Gordon Tiffany to be staff director of the New Civil Rights Commission. The action, taken over bitter opposition from Southern Democrats, will enable the commission finally to complete its staff arid get started with its job of investigating denials of voting and other civil rights. DE GAULLE (Con tit, ued from Page one) —that the coup was pulled off in [ Algeria but was-not followed up in Paris, where 10,000 police kept down planned demonstrations. There was a possibility of continued resistance even if the antigovernment forces led by Gen. Jacques Massu gave in completely to stern orders from Pflimlin and President Rene Coty. Withdrawal Indicated Massu announced Wednesdaynight his "Committee of Public Safety” would be relieved of its functions as soon as a new French minister for Algeria'arrives in Algiers. He specified a new minister must be acceptable to the Algerian French, however. —The independent - Conserva-, tive Party which mostly voted aga i n s t Pflimlin's investiture withdrew a threat to pull its four ministers out of the cabinet. The four ministers acted independently of the party in accepting the posts—Rival demonstrations by extreme rightists and CofnmuniSts in Paris Wednesday evening fizzled out after minor skirmishing with powerful forces of police and Mobile Guards. De Gaulle returned to his country retreat Wednesday night after spending the day in Paris without making any statement about his political plans.
