Boy Is Arrested In Auto Theft Attempt Believed Part Os Auto Theft Gang A boy, 17 years old, was apprehended in Berne Monday morning by Alfred Zumbrum, night policeman. The boy was apparently trying to cross wires in the ignition Os a parked car to steal the car. The youth would not give his name Ot 'Where he was from. In fact he would not give any information to the sheriff’s department at all. Later on in the day, however, he did admit he was from Oklahoma City, Okla., and that he had been traveling with four companions. Information shows that the boy is in violation of parole and that he and his companions have stolen four automobiles on their trip from Oklahoma to California and then headed for the east coast. One of the group is being held in the Portland jail. The othej, three are still being sought. The man in the Portland jail gave the same name, Ernest Smith, to authorities as did the youth being held here. When apprehended by officials, the lad was extremely filthy, and claimed to have npt eaten for six days, although he would eat no food at the jail, where fie was taken by the sheriff's department. He has been furnished with some new I clothes and finally has eaten some of the food being offered him. The youth caught at' Berne was I in the parking lot of the Berne Oil Company when he was noticed by Zumbrum He had locked himself in the car but came f .out and surj rendered when ordered to do so. Meanwhile, a car owned by Mrs. Angelina Strahm, of Fort Wayne, was recovered yesterday morning [ in the northeast part of Berne. Poj lice believe that the captured youth, and others, had stolen the * car in Fort Wayne and then ditched it at Berne. school. Another youth in the car has not yet been found. The Jay county sheriff’s office stated that the boy was part of a five-boy group which split up in Fort Wayne. Jay county authorities said that the FBI had been contacted and that they would assume jurisdiction of the case today. Attend Slate Sunday School Convention Annual Convention Held In South Bend Mr. and Mrs. Earl Chase, of Decatur, were among the 530 who registered during the annual state Sunday school convention held last week at the Gospel Center church in South Bend. Chase is the president of the Adams county Sunday school association. At the two-day meeting, attended by Sunday school workers from all over the northern part of Indiana, the Rev. Harold Etling was one of the principal leaders while the Rev. Clate Risley, the executive officer of the N.S.S.A., and the Rev. Warren Filkin of the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. Chicago, were the other speakers. There were seven workshops held during each session of the convention. Various methods and reasons for the teaching task of the Sunday school were given in the workshops. Aside from the workshops, were the 15 or 20 booths set up in the basement of the church, displaying the latest equipment that could be used inrthe Sunday school classes. The Rev. Layland Smith, pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist church, of South Bend, was elected the new president of the Indiana state organization and Rev. Etling was the elected the treasurer of the group. During the business session a new constitution was adopted by the convention members. A request for invitations for a place to hold the convention next year was made by—the president and Chase was reelected as a committee member of the state organization. Trucker Is Arrested On Traffic Charge George P. Walda, 42, Fort Wayne, was arrested by state police on 13th street Monday at 1:30 p.m. for not having turn signals on his truck. Walda will appear in justice of the peace court to the charge May 10 at 4 p.m. a

Reports Submitted To Commissioners - Highway And County Home Reports Filed The county commissioners received two monthly reports Monday at their meeting at the courthouse. The reports submitted were the Adams county highway department and the superintendent’s report for the county home. The report from the county home shows a total of $1,475.52 received from all sources for the population of 27 people. The report from -the Adams county highway department gave a total of miles traveled by trucks as 21.612: total miles by road graders, 2,900; total tons ot stone used in patching and sealing roads, 3,206,445; total tons of stone hauled on roads, 3.014,425: total miles of road sealed, 21 miles. Total tons of stone distributed in each township: Blue Creek. 211.75. Monroe 567.3, Jefferson 38.62, French, 255.15, Hartford 9.95. Wabash, 307.105, Kirkland, 223.85, St. Marys. 290.6, Washington. 121.35. Preble, 88, Root, 454.8, Union 445.95. One’firm has been contacted on the sand-blasting ’of the World War I memorial on the courthouse lawn. Two other firms will be contacted in the near future. Industrial Division Meets Next Monday The monthly luncheon meeting for the Decatur industrial division of the Chamber of Commerce wiH be held next Monday at 12 o’clock sharp at the Decatur Youth and Community Center. Lloyd E. Beatty. vice president in the trust department of the Lincoln National Bank and Trust company. Fort Wayne, will be the guest speaker. His subject will be “Everyday Economics," which is the successful way to proper planning and savings towards retirement day. Members of the division who cannot attend are asked to* contact Fred E Kolter, on or before Friday noon.
