Scientists Concerned Over Pollution Os Air
EDITOR’S NOTE: The first of three dispatches on America’s air pollution problems. TodayAir pollution and health. JU By FRED DANZIG Unied Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK (UP) — Air Pollution, one of modern society’s self-inflicted wounds, has most of our population living dangerously. Sicentists have only recently become concerned about air pollution’s effects on our present and future health. One way or another, we all meet up with air pollution. We may' encounter it in heavy traffic, in a crude apartment house incinerator, near an area were garbage, serhp and industrial wastes are burned in the open, around metal smelting, oil refining or chemical plants, near lumber camps or paper mills. Sometimes it can be caused by a neighbor burning leaviss,- or“ by a dirt road. It can come in the form of dust, odors, fumes, gas, mist, smoke, vapors — any contaminat that gets into the air .and harms people, plants, animals and property. The newest aspect of this problem is radioactivity stemming from nuclear testing or indistrial uses of atomic energy, but this report is concerned only with “civilian,” or everyday air pollution, its effects and what is being done to control it. Small Cities, Too Authorities estimate that 10,000 American communities have air pollution problems and 7,500 of this number have fewer than 25,000 residents So it’s not just a big city problem. More and more, air pollution is being tagged a villain as sciefitsts learni more about t. Doctors, for example, now recognize a “smog complex” — irritation of the eyes, the nose or throat:, chest shortness of breath, nausea, headaches. 7 Air pollution apparently has other effects on health, too. A pioneer in air pollution research, Dr. Paul Kotin of the University of Southern-California, believes air pollution and not cigaret smoking to be the key factor behind increases in . lung cancer. “Industrialization has brought new substances such as oxidizing compounds in smog which cut down the lungs' defense against cancer - producing agents.” said Dr. Kotm.— Cancer Rate Lower The American Cancer Society has reported that “the lung cancer rate is lower in rural areas than in urban areas. This is one of the reasons why air pollution is. suspected as being a factor. . A Dr- Clarence A. Mills, professor

of experimental medicine at the University of Cincinnati, created a sensation in Los Angeles a few years ago when he reported that smog caused about 800 “excess deaths" over a threeyear period. Air pollution also affects our pocketbooks. Economists say we each spend about S2O a year because of air pollution—the money going for medical care, cleaning bills, repairs or replacement of property. Pollutants can ruin rubber, damage plants, corrode metals, cut worker efficiency and hinder a city's economic growth Industry and government combined spend about 100 million dollars a year on projects and research to clean our air. The goal is not absolute air purity, an impossibility in a modern industrial society. Byt scientists are aiming for a level of air. quality were no health hazards, economic losses or nuisances are present. In short, we no longer can afford to tolerate dirty air.
