Word from Italy is to the effect that America's first pro-pre-fect is resting easy after an operation in Rome for the purpose of amputating an arm. The Cardinal had not yet accepted his high post*, but wps on the way to accept the highest title ever granted an American. The actual taking effect of the new title will be delayed until Cardinal Stritch is able to be about, which no doubt will be several weeks. ■ 'O' ■ O' J. O. Sellemeyer, Los Angeles, Calif., has sent us a newspaper telling of the opening of the major league season at Los Angeles in which the Dodgers lost to San Francisco, 6-0. There were more than 75,000 fans in attendance for the National league at a single game. With two National League teams in the majors on the west coast this year, attendance marks may fall. It will be a great season and may predicate the moving of more major teams to the west coast. ——o oI— The measure to extend welfare payments has been passed and it is likely that the President will ask for speedy completion of the act. It extends payments and the federal government will take up the slack in funds. ■ " -O"- o— Earl Fuhrman, popular and efficient leader of Adams County Red Cross has been reelected to that post. Mr. Fuhrman has done a good job and along with his board and his very efficient director, Mrs. Joseph Oelberg, he has made a record second -to none in Adams county's long Red Cross history.

If you don’t care to come to the Daily Democrat office on election night you can call telephone number 3-2171 get the result* a Jew minutes after they have been recorded. The phone recorder will remain open all night. ——o o "The people are tired of being bamboozled by the Republicans," says former President Harry S. Truman. “People are tired of getting pep talks and reactionary policies. They are tired of getting words when they ask for deeds." Truman gave these principles to guide the Democratic party: "The Democratic party, is and must remain, the party of the people. The Democratic party must stand firmly and forthrightly for the full enjoyment and protection of the civil rights and liberties of every citizen in the land regardless of race, creed, or national origin.” o o The county board of election commissioners, including County Clerk Richard Lewton, Cal E. Peterson and Mrs. Elmer Beer has done a good job and all is in readiness for election day next Tuesday. The polls at each precinct will be open until 6 o’clock each night and then the task of counting the votes will start. Since there are few contests, the winners should be known by about midnight. Inspectors will get an envelope with a place to write results in each contest so that these results can be telephoned to the Daily Democrat and from there to many neighboring cities interested in results from here. The official results will then be published in Wednesday’s regular paper.

Police Check Tip In Kidnap Death Tip Received From Illinois Prison Head CHICAGO (UP) - State police today checked the "best tip yet” in the Maria Ridulph kidnap death. They sought a night club organist with a record as a sex offender in the East Dubuque-Galena, Hl., area. State Police Chief William H. Morris said the tip came from Warden Joseph Ragen at Stateville Prison near Joliet "Where he got it, I can’t say." Morris said. Ragen himself would offer no clue. The two men men Thursday night at supper to exchange information. It was learned that the tip filtered up to the warden through the “grapevine" among inmates at the huge prison. Morris said that records show the musician was jailed last year at Galena for a time"At this time, this is the best lead we have in the case,’’ Morris said. The 7-year-old girl was kidnaped at Sycamore, 111., Dec. 3 and her body was found last Saturday 90 miles northwest near Galena. Lt. Emil Toffant in charge of the investigation in the Galena area set up a road block near the wooded spot where the body was found. Morris said that every car passing the area for the next seven days would be stopped and occupants questioned for a possible clue. State police officers took pictures of a possible ‘tall blond man” who may have carried off Maria to Ray Vorwald. town marshal of Hazel Green. Wis., but he was unable to identify any of them as the penniless lodger who slept in his jail the night of Dec. 4. Maria’s playmate. 8-year-old Cathy Sigman, told police “a tall blond man” talked to Maria the night she disappeared and offered her a piggyback ride. Morris who came to Chicago on other business than the Ridulph case spent Thursday in a long review of the Maria investigation with Sheriff AM M. Deisz and other officials of De Kalb County at Sycamore Morris said that information from a La Salle, 111-, contractor was being checked out. Vorwald had said the man he befriended had mentioned working at a church at Amboy, 111., and the La Salle contractor said he had had a crew working in the area at the time. Trilobites — three-lobed cousins of the lobster — reigned for some 300,000,000 years on the floors of the oceans. The little animals became extinct, but left countless fossils that bear witness to their supremacy when earth was younger.

Says Steel Merger Aid Mid-Continent Official Os Steel Firm In Testimony NEW YORK (UP)—The entire mid-continent area would benefit from an expansion’ of steel facilities that would result from a merger of Bethlehem Steel Corp, and Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. a Federal Court was told today. George McCuskey, financial vice president of Youngstown, testified for the defense in the third trial week of the government’s antitrust suit to block the merger. The government contends the merger would lessen competition and tend toward monopoly by eliminating Youngstown as an independent competitor in the Midwest. The defense asserts the merger would stimulate competition by enabling Bethlehem, which has no mid western plants, to expand Youngstown facilities. Bethlehem has said it will spend 358 million dollars in this endeavor if the merger is approved. McCuskey ' testified . Thursday that the 358 million dollars does not represent the full extent of the benefit to the mid-continent area if the merger is approved, because he figure does not include improvements which would be made “in the normal course of business.” Under cross - examination by chief government prosecutor Allen A. Dobey. McCuskey also admitted that the two steel companies compete in a small way in certain midwestern areas including troitIn earlier testimony the defense has brought out that although* the competition may exist, it is not really effective competition because of the higher freight rates involved in the Bethlehem shipments from eastern mills. Also Thursday the defense Introduced into evidence additional statistical data pertinent to the case. Altogether 100 exhibits were produced showing shipments by Bethlehem and Youngstown ,in various steel products and what percentage of industry shipments they represented. —. ——-
