Six Persons Killed In Tenement Fire 16 Others Injured InH arlem Sunday NEW YORK (IF 4AA flash lir* in a Harlem tenement killed a father and 5 children, injured 16 persons, and routed 250 frqm the building Sunday. Fire fighters worked feverishly for an hour before bringing the blaze under control. Nine firemen and two policemen were among the injured. They were treated at the scene for smoke poisoning.

The dead were Robert Mandiville, 34; four of his seven Children, Sandra, 8, twins Robert and Anthony, 4, Cheryl, 1, and Yvonne Thomas, 4. who was visiting the Negro family. Mandiville’s wife and three children fled to safety as did others who escaped after firemen and policemen raced through the buildring awakening, tenants. —- ———uh I■ I I ir-mi ■■■ Decatur Young Men In Chemical Corps Charles Voglewede; son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Voglewede. and Michael Kohne, son of Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Kohne, left today for three years service in the U. S. Army chemical corps. The two Decatur young men enlisted under the new army program which allowed them to choose their field, and where they serve overseas. They will take their eight basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky.. and following this will attend chemical corps school in Alabama. They will be assigned to a chemical unit overseas in Europe after their graduation. Voglewede is a former St. Joseph’s college student, and Kohne studied at Notre Dame. ward in Christian education.” Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 the first session starts with as ymposium on vacation Bible school. Persons form a five state wide area are coming to this convention. It is open to everyone regardless of demonational affiliation. Some of the special music will be furnished by the Cincinnati Bible Seminary choir Tuesday evening, and the Great Lakes Bible College choir Thursday evening. Friday morning wilj be the closing assembly and convention sumI mary. At noon Friday there will be the teacher’s luncheon to include superintendents and ministers also.

Berne’s Citiien of the Year for 1957 is the Rev. C. A. Schmid, pastor of the Cross Evangelical and Reformed church, selected recently by the Berne Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Selection was announced through the program “This Life is Yours’’ given in the Berne auditorium. Rev. Schmit! has been pastor of the Cross church for the past 32 years. During this time he has been exceptionally active in community affairs. In recognition of his long and devoted service, he was presented with a trophy from the Berne scouting organization and also a plaque from the Rotary club in which he holds an honorary membership. The Jaycees presented Rev. Schmid with a hand-painted portrait of himself from Anspaugh Studios. Kindergarten Class Exams On Thursday AU children becoming five years old on or before September 15 will be eligible for the Lincoln school; kindergarten class. A pre-school medical examination will be held Thursday at the Lincoln school, starting at 8 am, The examinations are given free of charge through the parent, teachers association. The girls will be examined from 8 o’clock until 9, and the boys from 9 o’clock until 10.
Topton Man Drowns As Boat Overturns MONTICELLO (IB -r Gilbert Leroy Goodnight, 51. Tipton, drowned Sunday in Lake Shafer when a 14foot motorboat overturned as it carried four persons on a joyride. Police said the vessel capsized in a turn. Goodnight's wife Ruth, 52, and Betty L. Day, 16, Kokomo, were saved because they wore life jackets. Charles Brumfield, 44, Hemlock, swam to shore. Lisis Dates Flag Should Be Flown Seven Days Yearly For Flag Display There are seven days each year when the American flag should be displayed at every home an(i place of business. Fred Bieberich. commander of Adams Post 43, the American Legion, stated today. During February on the 12th and 22fld, Lincoln and Washington’s birthday;"May 30, Memorial Day; June 14, flag day; July 4, Independance Day; the first Monday in September, Labor day; and November 11, Veteran’s day, the flag should be displayed. < Every home and business still has plenty of time to secure a flag for Memorial Day. to honor our fallen heroes in the nation's many wars." Bieberich continued. It is also recommended that the flag be flown on January 1, New Year's day; Armed Forces day in May each year; V-J day, August 14'; Columbus day, October 12; Thanksgiving day, the last Thursday in November; Pearl Harbor day, December 7; and Christmas day, December 25. When hung horizontally, the stars should be at the upper left as viewed from the street. The same is true if hiSng vertically. If displayed on a staff on Memorial day. the flag should fly at half-staff from sunrise until noon, and at . full-staff from noon until sunset.
Star Farmer Award To Richard Myers Adams Central FFA Banquet Is Held Richard Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Myers of Blue Creek township, received the chapter star farmer award at the annual Adams Central FFA banquet held Friday evening at the school. Myers, a senior at Adams Central, has been in FFA work for four years. Richard Hirschy, son of Mr. and Mrs. NOah Hirschy of Monroe township, received the DeKalb award for four years outstanding FFA work. Officers installed for the coming year were Jerry Gerber, president; Roy Mazelin, secretary; Clair Inniger, reporter; Tim Ringger, treasurer; John Inniger, vicepresident; and Dwight Moser, sentinel. Don Ray, John Inniger, and Jerry Gerber gave talks on FFA work. Chris Inniger and Harold Moser were elected honorary farmers during the meeting attended by more than 70 boys and their parents. Dr. John Coster, of Purdue university, spoke on “From the bag to the book.” v Rolland Zimmerman was master of ceremonies, and the chapter president opened the banquet. Clair Inniger welcomed the parents, and his father, Elmer Inni-1 ger, gave the response. The awards were presented by Martin Watson, FFA advisor for the school. Auto Is Demolished In Accident Sunday A vehicle driven by Paul Dwight ‘ Hummer, 19, route 2, Portland,' was considered a total loss Sunday: in an accident on U. S. highway, 27. 1.8 miles south of’ Berne. The, accident occurred aT 4:15 p.m. The car was northbound on U.S. 27. Approaching a curve, the car went into a skid and the driver lost control of the car.. The auto ran off the road on the right side, and into the ditch and turned over.!
