Television's Emmy Awards On Tuesday • 90-Minute Showing Set Tuesday Night By VERNON SCOTT United Press Staff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UP) — Cowboys will sing, comedians will make serious speeches and glamour girls will vie for golden statuettes Tuesday night when television’s 10th annual Emmy awards are beamed to televiewers. Taking a page from the movie’s Oscar blowout last month, video will hurl as many of its stars as possible into the 90-minute wingding. One big difference between the two shows: Oscar was a free man. Emmy is a kept woman—she’s got a sponsor! Two of the biggest stars in TV’s briefhistory, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, won’t be seen as a result. These mainstays were nixed because of sponsorship conflict. Other big names were scratched for the same reason On the brighter side, Emmy will ape Oscar in an attempt to enertain viewers by splicing presentation of awards with song, dance and comedy routies. Included is a 10-year cavalcade harking back to 1946. ' Goebel WiU Help Handing out Emmys to the best performers and technicians will bepolly Bergen, Gisele MacKenzie, Milton Berle, Arlene Francis, Ida Lupino, George Gobel, Red Buttons, Jack Benny and Loretta Young. Featured in the music department is a quartette composed of comic Louis Nye, Misses Bergen and MacKenzie and James Garner (TV's Bret Maverick). Phil Silvers is scheduled to emcee the New York segments of the vacuum tube bash with Danny Thomas cracking the whip from tinsel town. Biggest pre-show hassle involves the well-received “Annie Get Your Gun' spectacular starring Many Martin. The Academy of TV Arts and Sciences ruled it ineligible for best show honors because it originally was produced for the stage rather than for television. Controversy Raged Controversy also raged over mish-mash categories which lump together all maimer of dissimilar performers. Most confusing of all is the

PRESIDENT (Continued from pag> one) "This is essential if we are to keep ahead of the Russians in the area of foreign economic development.*' —An increase of >1,700,000,000 in spending on domestic programs in the fiscal year starting July 1. Truman said “the bulk of this expansion would be for education, public health and public assistance.” This would continue to be increased so that by fiscal 1964 outlays would total about 12 billion dollars for education, health and public assistance, and almost five billion for development of natural resources and housing. In addition, Truman recommended federal aid to extend unemployment compensation for jobless workers who have exhausted their state payfents. He also urged Congress to increase social security benefits at its current session- “We can afford it economically, and certainly it is one of the most desirable methods of expanding purchasing power,” he said.
