I Comments zMI I on as. Lesson t £*SEI l&Sß=s===&====J Creamed Comments on the Sunday School lesson.'God prepares a leader, Exdous 3- 217 and 10.1 5 leader. Exodus 3:1-7, 10-15, for Sunday, April 30. From our last lesson we learned that Israelties had almost forgotten God and had lost the sense of their own destiny as revealed by God to Abraham. Moses had been educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, but had to flee because of his slaying of an Egyptian tasmaster Who had struck an Israelite. He found refuge in the > Midian desert and receivedJJod’s call when he was 80 years old. This lesson shows the part God can play in developing leaders. Vs. 1-3. “Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb . . . And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. . . And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and See this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” Moses had been in the desert forty years since his flight from Egypt, and kept the flocks of his father-in-law. A frequent emblem of God in the Scriptures is fire. Ordinarily, if a dry desert shrub caught fire, it would be consumed in an instant. The fact that it wasn’t, caught Moses’ attention and made SPRUNGER IMPLEMENT CO. him realize something supernatural was taking place. Vs. 4, 5. 6. “And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, midst of the bush and said, Moses, God called unto him out of the Moses. And he said. Here am I . . . And he said. Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon I thou standest is holy ground. . . Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God." Whatever explanation there may be for the burning bush that was not consumed, its only importance is that it was the Jjlace where Moses had a deep and’profound spiritual experience. God emphasized the need for revence on this occasion by reminding -him to remove his shoes, as is customary in the East even now when entering a holy place. Moses hid his face both in reverence and far. Early Old Testament accounts inferred that a person would die if he looked upon the face of God 'Judges 13:22). God made it clear that he was the God of the partirarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Vs. 7 10. “And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows: . . . Come now therefore, I will sent thee untp Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.” God demenstrated his - qualities of love and compassion in indicating he had not forgotten the children of Israel in their anguish. God always raises up leaders like Moses to help his children in their time of need. The time of deliverance was at hand for the Israelites, and God commissioned Moses to lead them out of captivity. Vs. 11, “And Moses said unto God. Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? . . . And he said Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto, thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out <*f Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain." Moses felt inadequate for his great task but God assured him of his guidance and his continuous presence in carrying out his mission. As a further encouragement. God assured him he would worship God on the way very mountain he was standing, after he had completed his mission. 628 Cleveland Street Huston Bever Jr., pastor 8:30 a.m., “The Christian Brotherhood Hour,” over WKJG.
