V. 7. "And the Children of Israel were fruitful, and "Increased abundantly. and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them." The 70 Souls of Jacob's family had become in 215 years a tribe of approximately 600,000 men. They were so numerous that the king considered them a threat to the Egyptians. Vs. 8, S, 10. "Now there arose up a new king oyer Egypt, which knew not Joseph. . . And he said trhto his' people;" BeHolcTtfie" people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; . . . Wme on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it conte to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also un-' to our enemies, and fight against Us, and so get them up out of the land." ittoMaUte— ' I ill Ugg not real Egyptians, but invaders from Asia. These ginws and from Asia. These kings were expelled about 1550 B. C. by a native Egyptian ruler. The new ruler did not want them to escape from the land for they were useful as slaves; nor did he want them to turn to the enemy for deliverance from their persecution. Northeast Egypt was susceptible to invasions. V. 11. "Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and RameseS." The king hoped the hard labor would weaken the numerical strength of the Israelites while at the same time he was having them build storehouses to house his wealth. Vs. 12, 13, 14. "But the mhre they afflicted them,- the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the childrenoflsrael. , .... And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: . . . And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; all their service wherein they made them serve, was with rigour." Affliction frequently draws people together, . 'makes them more unified and powerful. So it was with the Israelites, and the Egyptians were grieved to discover this fact. They were, both jealous of and hated the Egyptians. “ Vs. 15. 16, 17. "And the king of Egypt spake to the Jlebrew midwives, of which the name of one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Push: . . . And he said. When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. . . But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the - men children alive." Midwives performed a service winch today is performed by doctors and nurses. The king foolishly ' thought he could make the midwives his allies in bringing about h reduction in the Israelite population. The king'had not suc*i ceeded in weakening the Israelites as he had hoped through hard labour so he resorts to infanticide. The midwives feared God more than the king and so disobeyed him and had courage enough to say so, using very weak excuses. - Vs. 18. 19. " And the Tjf Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them. Why have ye done this thing, and saved the men children, alive? . . . And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they me lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them." It is possible that the Israelite women were more healthy and viorous than the more pampered and indulgent Egyptian women. Probably, however, they did not want any part of the king’s cruel and used any excuse to avoid being a part of it. Vs. 20 . 21. 22. "Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty, . . And it came to pass, because the midwives- feared God, that he made them houses And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying. Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive." Since strenuous labor had not weakened the Israelites and the king could not enlist the aid of the midwives, he made a final effort by issuing a general order for all male babies to be thrown in the Nile. If Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith js also vain. — Bible.
