Follows Space Report The official announcement was not precise as to the targets of the first lunar launchings. A Pentagon spokesman said he is certain the Defense Department intends to "look at all of the moon,” including the so-called “far side” which has never been seen by man. . The announcement of new moon projects followed up a report issued late Wednesday by the President's Science Advisory Committe on what is feasible now and what lies far in the future of space exploration The report disclosed that U.S. scientists are eager to send a clock into space in an earth satellite “as soon as possible” to one of the late Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity. President Eisenhower said he found the report, entitled “Introduction to Outer Space,” to be "so informative and interesting” that he wanted to shafe it with "all the people of America and indeed with all the people of the earth.” , He said it was “not science fiction” but * a sober realistic presentation prepared by leading scientists-’ Its discussing the future projects, the scientists made clear that man is not going to the moon anytime soon. They said he might do so “within one or two decades” or might not accomplish the feat even “in this country.” A more immediate project, they Plan Civilian Agency They said one “rough estimate” has been made that it will require an investment of two billion dollars spent "over a number of years" to put a man on the moon WANTED I J WELL | DRILLING Moderate Rates’ ,(• Pump Installation and Repair. -—CALL—BOB SMITH 3-8452 SHMiM■

and return him safely to earth, said, is a “crucial and fairly simple gravity experiment” that physicists want to run “as soon 1 as possible. '. This would involve ' a test of Einstein's theory that a 1 clock will run faster as the gravi- , tational field around it Is reduced The scientists’ report was issued a few hours after this country’s 1 third artificial moon. Explorer 1 111, went into orbit. The President disclosed earlier that he would ask Congress soon to provide the civilian control “of government activities incident to civilian space programs." The President announced this, without elaboration, at his news conference. He presumably plans to seek creation of a new civilian agency to take over satellite and other strictly scientific space programs from the Defense Department. Cost "Comparatively Low” The special report of Eisenhower’s scientific advisers was seen as an answer to some scientists and laymen who have advocated a crah program to beat Russia in manned flight to the moon nd planets. It made these points: Crash programs in space science are not in the national interest if they weaken other scientific endeavors. “Research in outer space affords new opportunities in science, but it does not diminish the importance of science on earth,” the report said The cost of exploring space with unmanned satellites and instruments is “comparatively low" while the cost of transporting men and material through space “will be extremely high.” The .report said it would require a giant rocket engine with a thrust of about “one or two million pounds” to land a man on the moon and get him home safely. This compares with a thrust of 83,000 pounds for the satellitelaunching Vanguard rocket. Improve Weather Forecasts And it said that “while nuclear power may prove superior to chemical fuels in engines of multi-million-pound thrust, even the atom will provide no short cut to space exploratioii,” The report made these other points: An atomic bomb should not be exploded on the moon because to do so might seriously affect whatever biological life is there, and also the moon's naturally acquired radioactivity should be measured first. Satellites hold great promise of improving we a t he r forecasts. “Two or three weather satellites could make a cloud inventory of the whole globe every few hours. From this meteorologists believe thy could spot large storms (including hurricanes) in the early stages. . . .” Suggestions that space will become a battleground in war “do not hold up well on close examination or appear to be achievable at an early date” The Bible story of manna being provided for the Israelites is buttressed by solid fact. During summer in the Sinai, the National Geographic Magazine says, scale insects secrete white droplets of a sweet and nourishing substance that seems to appear mysteriously | on bushes. - , ' . , ~, , —- ....... —„ * -
SENATE (Contlnutfl from pay on*) posing any limitation on the size of bHlboards when he sets federal standards. Sen. Joseph C. O’Mahoney (DWyo.) won approval of an amendment restricting standards the secretary could set to four types named in the bill, plus a ban on signs advertising illegal activities. The four are official direction signs; lease and sale signs for adjacent property; signs conforming to state law and federal standards advertising activities conducted no more than 12 miles from the sign; and signs about special interest features. SMITH (Continued trom page one) air," and that Smith was welcome to use it. Smith said he told Peak, when Peak asked -“Where will I go to find Dean Burton,” that "You're looking at him." No Concealment Tried Smith said Peak then “swore me in as Dean Burton and I signed it.” * A handwriting expert's testimony at Smith’s trial last fall was that the "Dean Burton” signature was in Smith's handwriting. That testimony was believed to have plaved a prominent part in convicting the ex-chai?man. Smith also denied Teverbaugh's contention that . Smith prodded him to sell the lats. Smith said Teverbaugh brought up the subject himself. He said he did not know at that time that the state would need the land—"l wouldn't have touched them if I had known the state was going to get them.” MOVIELAND TConttnaed rrom page one) from another metium, film editing and music scoring awards.
