Chiropractors Say Exams Are Rigged Judge Byrd Orders Lie Detector Tests BLUFFTON W — Wells Circuit Judge Homer J. Byrd said today six chiropractors and a state medical investigator have agreed to take lie detector tests in Indianapolis Monday in connection with charges that examinations for medical licenses were “rigged.’* Byrd ordered the tests in an effort to “j[et to the bottom” of the charges which developed as a side issue during a hearing in his court on a suit for an injunction to prohibit Dy. C. A. Engle, a Fort Wayne chiropractor, from practicing. Byrd said the six chiropractors who agreed to the tests at Indiana State Police headquarters were those who signed affidavits now on file in Byrd's court charging that examinations given by the Indiana State Board of Medical Registration and Examination were “rigged” to benefit some applicants for licenses and to hamper the efforts of others. The seventh person scheduled for a lie test is Elmer A. Nordholm, an investigator for the medical board. Byrd said the date for the tests was set by State Police Supt. Harold Zeis at the judge's request. Byrd said the affidavits will be sent to police headquarters for use in conducting the tests. Byrd sent letters to several persons whose names were mentioned in the affidavits and indicated that some of 12 names on a supplementary list might be requested to take lie tests later. Byrd said he asked Miss Ruth V. Kirk, executive secretary of the board; to take a test but she did not respond. Instead, he said, he received a letter from the president of the medical board saying the board had advised Miss Kirk to refuse to take the examination in view of her long service and the fact her integrity was never questioned. Byrd said he will not rule in the injunction suit until results of the lie tests are tabulated and conclusions reached.
