Phone Harrison 1836. 63 6t Indiana Seed Law Covers Seed Packs Garden Seed Packs Covered By Law Home gardeners in Indiana ha\e been assured that the new Indiana Seed law covers garden seed packets, and that these packets are now being sampled In volume and tested to make sure the seed meets minimum standards set up in the new law. The old seed law, according to A. S. Carter, Purdue- University, director of seed control in Indiana, applied only to field and garden seeds that were sold in packages of one pound or larger. Carter said the new law states that any seed which does not meet the minimum germtination standard has to be clearly marked "below standard” in order to be marketed anywhere in Indiana. Since many of the home gardeners buy their seed locally, Carter advises choosing a reputable dealer, and check each packet of seed to make sure good seed is being bought. Inter-state shipment of seed is under the jurisdiction of the federal seed act standards. Any seed found to be substandard will be removed from the market until it is labeled as "substandard germination”. The state seed law indicates that all seed that has been treated with a substance, or process, to reduce, control or repel disease or other pests, is poisnonous, special label, ing is required and the poison statement, or symbol, must be used. No treated seed can be sold as grain feed unless completely labeled as such.
