Clark was the only wire service reporter aboard the U.S, atomic submarine Skate on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Plan legislation To Halt Price Cuts Senate Farm Heads Challenge Policies WASHINGTON (UP)— Senate farm leaders prepared today to challenge Administration farm policy with a bill to head off price cuts ordered by Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson. Chairman Allen J. Ellender (DLa.) of the Senate Agriculture Committee announced he had called the group together to consider “stop-gap legislation” at a closed meeting. Ellender did not go into detail. Other sources said the committee would consider a resolution by Sens. Hubert H Humphrey <DMinn. > and Stuart Symington (DMo.) that would freeze all 1958 farm price supports and planting allotments at not less than the 1957 level. s- These sources said backers of the Humphrey - Symington move were confident they had enough support to win committee .approval. Passage of the resolution would be a direct slap at Benson who attacked it at a news conference Monday. Benson said passage of-a price freeze would be a refusal “to face up to reality.” He said a freeze “is not going to help make the! adjustments we must make . . . I hope such legislation will not be passed. ’ The chief effect of the freeze I resolution would be: —Cancellation of the Benson- ! ordered cut in milk price supports from $3.25 per hundredweight to about $3 effective April 1 , —Cancellation of Benson’s cut . in wheat supports from $2 a bushel in 1957 to $1.78 for 1958.
