Michigan Stale Leads Indiana By Half-Game CHICAGO (UP) - Michigan State loomed today as a solid favorite for the championship as the Big Ten’s closest basketball race in history went into the final week. The speedy Spartans enjoyed a half-game edge over runner-up Indiana with only one game to go —a curtain - closer with the Hoosiers next Saturday The Spar'tans will carry a 9-4 record into the contest—a televised afternoon affair at East Lansing, Mich. The Hoosiers achieved their eighth win against four losses by defeating Purdue Saturday night, but they must travel to Illinois tonight before taking on the Spartans. Spartans Have Advantage Thus, as trophy dusting time came around, all signs pointed to Forddy ace rebounders from Michigan State. In their only game left, they had the important home court advantage on their side. The Hoosiers, on the other hand, were on the wrong side of the advantage in both remaining games. In addition they will face an Illini team eager to avenge an early season setback by the Hoosiers and to better their seventh place standing, Although the Spartans definitely had the inside track, there were other possibilities, including a three-cornered tie at the finish. That would be the situation if Indana wins on and loses one, if the Spartans lose their last game, and Purdue beats lowa tonight. The Spartans, Hoosiers and Boilermakers would wind up sharing 9-5 records for the season. Buckeyes Whip Gophers Minnesota and Ohio State closed their seasons Saturday night. The Buckeyes ended with an 8-6 mark by defeating the Gophers, 70-60. The Gophers closed with five wins and nine losses. When Saturday night’s results were in, each contender had its own niche in the standings for the first time in the current campaign From Michigan State at the top to Wisconsin at the bottom here wasn’t a tie in the lot. The Sparans staged a second half scoring barrage led by jump- | ing Johnny Green to down lowa, 83-65: the Hoosiers’ 109-95 win over Purdue set a new combined ’ scoring record, and Northwestern went over the .500 mark with an !, 82-65 triumph over Wisconsin. ' In addition to the Indiana - Ifli- ' nois and lowa - Purdue clashes, tonight’s pairings put Michigan 1 and Wisconsin. Pro Basketball Saturday’s Scores Detroit 103, New York 101. Cincinnati 101, Philadelphia 88. Sunday’s Scores Boston 107, Syracuse 100. Minneapolis 102, Philadelphia 92. St. Louis 103, Cincinnati 93.
