Une of the President’s top aides says now that-if things aren’t better nationally by early in March, we may have a tax cut for individuals. That is good news if it’s true, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. A substantial tax cut would help everyone and the G.O.P. strategists never have been interested in helpfhg the lower bracket people who need it so badly. This is an election year, however, and we may get a cut. ' o—o— County treasurer Waldo Neal has the tax bills ready to mail out in the next few days. When you get your statement, don’t be mad at him. You had ample opportunity to attend hearings and protest the rates so at least for another year you’ll have to take your medicine and pay high rates. Lots of things could be cut out each year but you can bet they won’t be unless you, the people, start protesting about the ever increasing cost of government. ——o o The Daily Democrat has been warning the people for several months that unless some concrete plans were started we soon would have a repetition of the old Hoover days with bread lines and millions of unemployed. This is slowly coming to happen and we should get busy immediately taking up the slack in industrial slow downs. No, Mr. President, you can’t stop it with a lot of fine words. It takes action and quick or we’ll be in a mess which will take years to work out of. o o>— The increase of postal rates might be a lot bigger than anticipated and a lot nearer than most people thought. A five cent rate on first class letters is senseless. The people pay tor the deficit, and as long as the service isn’t any better than it has been in recent months, why should we be concerned. You can bet that the postal service isn’t going to improve any until the employes get more money and then it may not. After all, if the employes don’t kill anyone, they have lifetime “jobs.

Just what is wrong with America. If we contribute one dollar to CARE, we can send several pounds of good food to some foreigner, but to contribute to our own unemployed, it takes days and months of red tape and then the government will set up elaborate machinery and in the long run, the needy will finally get in a bread line or get a fraction of their requirements, and politicians will get the balance. o o We read an interesting item in a newspaper recently written by Bill France, president of the National association for stock cars. He suggested that every motor car driver be compelled to take an examination prior to getting a driver’s license similar to those taken by fliers, and ins*tead of having state control, have federal control. France says wjih the millions Os automobiles on the highways, it isn’t fair to have a man take a 10 minute examination driving 15 miles an hour and then get a license as an expert. He says his plan, after a few years would be simple and the examinations could then be put on an annual basis and the highways soon would be as safe as merry-go-rounds. ' o o Virgil M. Simmons, co-publish-er of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette died last week following a heart attack in a Florida resort. Simmons, district chairman for the Democratic party in, the old Eighth served briefly in the 1931 General Assembly filling the vacancy caused by the death of the late George Saunders. He held several state jobs, including head of the department of conservation and was active in state politics for many years. He always resided in He made an unsuccessful attempt to be nominated as Secretary of State on the Democratic ticket ih 1931, and most of the rest of his political work was in organization-. Simmons never married and when in Bluffton he resided with a brother Joe, who survives.
