Cullen said today that oil I officials who honored House Re- : publican Leader Joseph W Martin Jr. at a controversial fundjraising dinner did so. because he is "fighting for free enterprise"— not to influence his support of the natural gas bill. Cullen, of Housi'-n. Tex., is qne ,of the nations wealthiest men. In a letter to the Washington Post and Times Herald. Cullen

1 ■'• I said neither he nor most of the oil men who attended the Martin dinner would gain much "moneys i wise by the outcome of the gas bill” in Congress. Furthermore, he said, he. did I "not believe that tlje average oil man is idiotic enough to believe that Joe Martin could be swayed; by money...' The dinner Cullen referred to was held in Houston and raised SIOO,OOO for the Republican Party.' Martin was the honored guest and featured speaker. In prompting the dinner. H.J. <Jack> Porter. Texas GOP national committeeman and oil man. I sent out a letter hailing Martin ns a friend of Texas oil and gas ‘ interests! It said Martin had "mustered two thirds of the Republican votes in the House each time the gas 1
bill passed' and th£t "it will heap to Joe Martin” to do the same "in order to pass the gas bill this year ■ r The till, which would free independent natural gas producers i from federal controls, has passed Congress twice but been twice vetoed--once by former President Truman and once by Presiderft . Eisenhower. , Eisenhower, although his administration favored the measure: vetoed it because of “arrogant | lobbying tactics" by its industry supporters. It is pending again in I Congress, ! In the furor that resulted from i Porter's letter, the Republican NaI tibnal Committee, with Eiscnhowi er’s approval, refused to accept any of the proceeds from the i Houston dinner.

Today s Sport Parade (Reg. U.S. Pat. Off ) By OSCAR FRALEY United Press Sports Writer 11 NEW YORK (UP> — Ty Cobb, the old “Georgia Peach," figures that Ted Williams can go on “at least as long as I did" and the Rt ‘d S° x star agrees without question. Cobb played until he was 43. Williams, who last season was the top hitter in baseball with a .388 average, will be 40 in August. According to Cobb’s figures, l Williams has at least three good seasons left in him and Williams backed this up ty confiding to friends “I feel I have several more rood years left.'' "Several" is a rather indefinite) span of seasons. In Good Shape “But you can't get away from the fact that Williams is l in remarkable physical shape and takes care of himself," said Cobb, who hit .323 for. the Philadelphia Athletics when he closed it out at 43 Williams is looking,., forward eagerly to a season in which the ! rich Red Sox will pay him $125,- . 000. He is in happier winter spirI its than ever and is concerned only about an ankle injury he suf- ! sered fishing in Labrador last fall. I Doctors have told him the ankle I will be all right but he admits; I "it still bothers me." I Cobb thinks he will be all right, too, and asserts that Joe DiMaggio “could have played a couple more years, too.” * Joltin' Joe discloses that he could have "written my own ticket" to keep playing with the Yan-' kees when he stepped down after the 1951 season at the age of 37. "Dan Topping offerred me a blank contract and told me to fill •in my own figurje," says DiMag- : I gio. "But I knew 1 couldn't play 'every day and I wasn't worth 'that kind of money to the Yan--1 kees:" A Proud Man There is more to DiMaggios I decision than that. Joe is an exj tremeley proud man. He cherishes the great moments he had with ) and for the Yankees and, when I physical trilments cut down his efj ficiency and he faced periods ofj inaction on the bench, Joe decid-1 1 —
