Decatur Commodores Defeated By Andrews Tuesday]Night, 79-73
The Decatur Catholic Commodores were downed by the Andrews Cardinals, 79-73, Tuesday night in a nip and tuck battle which saw the lead change hands 22 times and a tied score at 12 different stages. Four players for each team broke into double figures, with Crain of the Cardinals topping all scorers with 26 points. Meyer of the Commodores was next with 23, Bigelow had f7, Reed and Wilder scored 16 each, Collins had 15, Kable of the Commodores and Schenkel of the Cardinals each netted 10. Tom Meyer of the Commodores was ejected from the game by the officials in the final minute of play when tempers flared after a wild scramble for the ball. Andrews took the tip-off and scored for a 2-0 lead but three quick fielders by Hake, Kable and Wilder put the Commodores ahead 6-2 in the first minute of play. For the rest of the quarter it was a seesaw affair with one team being in the lead then the other until Wilder hit in the final five seconds to put the Commodores ahead at the end of the first period, 21-19. Fielders by Crain and Collins put the Cardinals in front at the start of the second eight minutes of play but the Commodores tied it up at 23-23 on a goal by Kable. Crain and Collins both scored again to make it 27-23. Wilder added a j bucket and Ripplinger scored io make the score 29-25 Reed and Kable added four points to tie the score again, 29-29, and the Commodores went into the lead midway through the quarter on a layup by Meyer. Crain , scored fivepoints on a field goal and a three- j point play to put the Andrews team i ahead. 34-31. They increased their lead to six points at the-half timet intermission with a score of 40-34. Saturday Redkey at Berne (2 p.m.l. the start of tne quarter brought the Commodores to within two points but Rudig scored to make it 42-38, the Cardinals on top. Reed, Kable and Hake added six points, holding Andrews to a foul toss and the game was tied at 43-43. Meyer added nine points for the Corpnrodores in the last half df the period but the Commodores couldn’t keep the big Andrews team from scoring. The Commodores couldn’t make their free throws in the final eight minutes of play while Andrews missed only one charity toss. Meyer added 10 points and Wilder scored five but the Commodores couldn't overcome the balanced scoring by the Andrews’ five, especially the 6’5” Bigelow who contributed nine points and the 6'2” i Crain, who added six points in the ■ final period. Andrews outscored Decatur, 25-19. in the last eight minutes for their 79-73 victory. The Commodores had 18 personals assessed against them and the Cardinals had 20 whisiieu on their j team. Redkey led all the way, holding ( a 10-7 lead at the first quarter, a 29-19 advantage at the half , and a 47-38 margin at the third , period. 1 Tom Stuber led the Cardinals with 17 points, although he was lost for the fourth quarter because ' of fouls. South Side And Central Rated Tops In State INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Fort Wayne South and city rival Central, which collide in this week’s “game of the week,” today ranked 1-2 in the weekly United Press Indiana high school basketball coaches’ poll. South's tall Archers, leading the elite for the second straight week, missed a clean sweep by just 9 votes. They received 13 of 18 firstplace votes and a total of 171 points. Central’s Tigers moved up from third place to second with 151 points, including three firsts. Only Terre Haute Garfield and Lafayette, fourth and 10th, respectively, also retained last week’s positions. The experts gave Garfiejd a vote of confidence following its 62-60 upset at Martinsville last Saturday and refused to demote coach Willard Kehrt's Wabash Valley tourney champs. Attacks Slips Kokomo, Indianapolis Tech and East Chicago Washington also ipoved up, while defending state champion South Bend Central, Jeffersonville and Indianapolis Attacks slipped but remained in the "Big 10” Kokomo was upped from a tie for seventh to fifth, Tech from the same spot to sixth, and the East Chicago Senators from ninth to a tie for seventh. The South Benders, poll leaders for 6 weeks .and runners-up last time, slipped to third following their 52-47 upset by Mishawaka last Friday. Jeffersonville won its last two starts since being upended at Martinsville but was voted ' down from fifth to ninth. Attacks, also victorious the past two times out, was dropped from sixth to a tie for seventh. No newcomers managed to crash the select circle for the second straight week. Hartford City Team Wins Mies Classic Hartford Bowl, of Hartford City, won the team event in the 22nd annual Mies Classic tourney, which was concluded at Mies Recreation last weekend. The winners led the field with a 3136 series, bowled on the second night of the tourney. Arcanum Tool, of Areanum, 0., was second with a 3119; Falstaff Beer, of Fort Wayne, third with 3074; West End Restaurant, Decatur, fourth with 3087; Retz for Sports, Muncie, fifth with 3084; Riverview Gardens, Decatur, sixth with 3060; Leland Smith Insurance, Decatur, seventh with 3058. Only other Decatur team placing in the money was Acker Cement, which placed 34th with a 2194. Prize money will be distributed to the first 35 teams, with a 2937 the lowest score on the prize list. Dick Mies, tourney manager, stated that prize money will be mailed in approximately two weeks, after all scores have been verified. Bob Lord, bowling with the End Restaurant, Decatur, won the high individual game prize with a 278. Retz for Sports had the high single team game with a 1061 (actual), with D. Crouse, the team's leadoff man, winning the prize for high individual series, bowling 687 on games of 215-266-206. Mies also stated that the annual Mies doubles tourney will open Saturday, March 1, and will continue on weekends until March 23. Gorillas Lose j I 1 To Lancaster Tuesday Night The Hartford Gorillas, after. leading through the first half,; fell victims of a second half rally by the Lancaster Central Bobcats Tuesday night, with the Wells i county team pulling out a 48-46 victory on the Hartford floor. . Hartford led at the first quarter, 12-8, at the half, 23-22, but at the third period, Lancaster piovCd to a 33-29 margin and held on through the final quarter. Well balanced scoring was shown by both teams. Trimble' tallied 16 and D. Johnloz 14 for Lancaster. Roger Moser scored I 15 points .and Derryle Pharr JI i for the Gorillas. The Bobcats] won the game at the foul line, ‘ scoring 10 free throws to six for Hartford. The Gorillas will entertain Poling of Jay county at the Hartford gym Friday night.

Winners Are Listed For Polio Tourney Gary Schultz, manager of the Polio Tourney conducted in Adams county during January, today issued his complete report of the meet. There were 438 entries in the 1958 tourney for total receipts of $438. Two-thirds of this amount, or $292, goes to the March of Dimes, under rules of the American Bowling Congress. In order to make the returns to bowlers more attractive, Anderson Industry. Decatur, and Hooker Paint paid the difference between 50 per cent and tne 06% per cent to make the actual return in prize money to the bowlers equal to 50 per cent of entry fees. Anderson and Hooker Paint also donated the trophy which was presented to the winner. Kenny Bauserman, of Monroeville, was the tourney winner with • 734 series, taking down first prize money and the tourney trophy. Winners of special prizes were Bill Tutewiler, actual three-game series high of 680, and Fred Hoffman for high single actual game of 226. Participation by leagues in the Polio Tourney was as follows: Classic, 139 entries; Major, 66; G.E,. Fraternal, 59; Legion, 56; G. E. Factory, 33; Minor, 27; Sportman’s, 21; Merchants, 16; Rural, 13; Central Soya, 8; Berne, O. Otterbein Is Handed First Season Loss INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Terre Haute Garfield, Jeffersonville and Lafayette, all members of the United Press coaches’ poll elite, coasted to Indiana high school basketball victories Tuesday night but Otterbein’s first loss of the season left only three unbeatens today. Garfield, upset at Martinsville last Saturday and No. 4 in the state, crushed city foe Schulte, 74-54, behind Terry Dischinger's 26 points. The Purple Eagles led by only 5 points at the half b u t turned the game into a rout in the second half for their 19th victory against 2 defeats. Jeffersonville, No. 9. dumped luckless Greensburg, 82-49, to stay in the running for the South Central Conference crown. It was the Pirates’ 19th straight loss this season. Lafayette, No. 10, won at Crawfordsville easier than expected, 60-46. Otterbein, which owned a string of 40 regular-season victories —17 in this campaign—ran out of gas at Wolcott in a double-overtime struggle, 42-40. Gene Morrison deposited the winning bucket in the “sudden death'' second extra period. That left 20-game winner Etna Green, 17-game winner Brookville and Springs Valley of French Lick with 15 victories the only perfectrecord crews left Four teams, led by South Bend Central, carried perfect records into last year's state tourney. In other top games, Calumet, which had won 16 straight following an opening loss to powerful Gary Roosevelt, was tripped up by Gary Mann, 57-54. in a game tied eight times.
