Accidents, the council estimated, took 95,000 lives in the United States. Highways had the highest accident toll. Homes were next. Council statisticans sought a grain of comfort in their figures, which estimated 9,500.000 injured and a cost of $11,800,000,000, in addition to the dead, from accidents in 1957. They found it in the accident rate. Because the population grew, the death rate came down to 55.8, an all time low since the council started figuring its statistics. Motor vehicle deaths declined in 1957 from 1956, but still led the parade of cases, 38,500. Home accidents took 37,500 lives,, accidents at work killed 14,200, and public accidents, not motor vehicle, 18,000. The council noted that the motor vehicle totals included some also shown as work and home deaths. Deaths to children under 5 vears old declined 1 per cent from 1956.
