Sleet, snow and a cold drizzle failed to stop shoppers Wednesday in Decatur and a big crowd visited the local stores for the Dollar Day offerings. They came early and stayed late and most merchants reported brisk sales. It lot of work, but most merchants believe that the work is well worth it. both in advertising their store and acquainting shoppers with the fine quality of merchandise the local retailers handle. Every Dollar Day brings more permanent customers. f o-—o The mjist disastrous fire in many years swept the Lewis Beery Dodge and Plymouth building Tuesday night causing total loss to the building and contents and also to several automobiles parked around the building. Loss has not been officiary determined but it' probably will not be ps large as first televised by Fort Wayne stations. Some twentyfive firemen, volunteers and regulars from Decatur. Preble and Monroe joined in fighting the blaze which spread rapidly. First firemen on the scene realized that the building was gone and they centered their efforts on saving nearby property and with great success. o o Automobile manufacturers will have to take more stock in their local distribution systems. Two dealers in Decatur have closed shop in addition to the at least_ temporary closing of the Beery Dodge concern. Manufacturers are setting up their distribution systems so a dealer cannot make any money and then they force new cars on them. We believe they would have much more tales success if they went back to their old system of local advertising of at least permitting the local dealer to have some control over how he will advertise. We can t make ourselves believe that telexvision shows where the performers get the top trillinp! will sell automobiles in such a competitive field. It takes local contact and lots of it. .
