Youth Signs With Orioles Forsßo,ooo ST. LOUIS (UP)—Dave Nicholson, 18, baseball prospect who had mast major league teams throwing him fat contract offers, today looked forward to service with the Baltimore Orioles. He signed a contract Sunday night that called for a bonus estimated at SBO,OOO — not the highest offer, according to insiders. Nicholson reportedly turned down SIOO,OOO offered by the Chicagp Cubs to join the Orioles, a club that he thought offered him the best opportunity. Only the Detroit Tigers failed to bid. James Kielty, president of the Orioles, said in New York that Nicholson had received a “modest bonus.” Neither the Nicholson family, nor the Orioles, represented by Del Wilbur, a scout, would disclose the exact amount of the bonus. Wilbur said Nicholson, a lefthanded outfielder, might be able to keep up with the pace at Baltimore after spring training at Scottsdale, Ariz. 'But he added that it was more likely that the 6-3 210-pounder would be sent to the minors where he could play every day. Dave, an outfielder who bats and throws left handed, said, “It was a hard decision, but I think I’ll have a better chartbe of making the Orioles in the shortest time.” He has played only on St. Louis high school and sandlot teams, but impressed scouts with his hard hitting, strong; fielding and fast running. The scouts, who have been eyeing Nicholson for more than a year, could not make an offer to him until Jan. 22 when his class graduated from high school. He was not a candidate for a diploma because he had withdrawn "from school last year. The 15 major league teams who had been banging on his door for almost a week had been reduced

Intersecfional Gaines Feature Prep Schedule INDIANAPOLIS (UP) - Intersectional clashes, probably the best (but not fool-proof) way to gauge the powers, wiU headline this week’s Indiana high school basketbaU program with Terre Haute Garfield and Indianapolis Attucks looking for more laurels. Most of the big games wiU be Saturday night, with important road tests involving Attucks Fort Wayne Central and city foe South Attucks, 60-43 winner at Gary WaUace last Saturday, invades seventh-rated JeffersonviUe in the intersectional headliner. Attucks rated 10th in last week's United Press coaches' poll. South, No. 2, tests tough Indianapolis Shortridge Saturday while Central, tied for No. 3 with Garfield, travels to Richmond, upsetter of Kokomo last Friday. Central beat Fort Wayne Catholic Saturday, 54-44, with big John Kelso caging 25 points. Garfield Tops “Valley” Top-rated South Bend Central also may be put to a rugged intersectional test at Anderson Saturday. Garfield, first team in the -43year history of the Wabash Valley tourney to capture the crown four times, entertains Bloomington Tuesday and is at South Bend Riley Saturday. The latter forced South Bend Central into overtime last week before losing. Garfield, beaten only once this season, staved off Hutsonville, 111., 76-71, then coasted over little North Central Saturday night, 81-51, to win the ‘‘Valley” crown for the first time in 10 years. The Purple Eagles next will set their, sights on the “state” in an attempt to beat a jinx which has kept the “Valley” champion from winning Indiana’s top hardwood prize. In major conference warfare this week, East Chicago Washington must turn back Gary Froebel Tuesday to protect it s West NIHSC lead Central Conference leader Elwood and Alexandria chose the neutral Anderson floor for their league battle Wednesday. Scottsburg Seeks No. 14 In the tight North Central Conference race Friday, front-running Lafayette invades Logansport, New. Castle is at Muncie Central, Anderson at Kokomo, Marion at Indianapolis Tech, and Richmond at Frankfort. Rushville can pull ahead of Jeffersonville in the South Central by | besting Franklin Friday. In the Southern Conference, new leader Huntingburg should find 3oonville a breeze Friday while Vincennes hopes to stay in the running by sinking Jasper. Scottsburg, the only major unbeaten still alive, was heavily favored to make North Vernon its 14th straight victim Friday. Middlek>ury owns a string of 16 after winning the Elkhart County tourney, one less than Etna Green, the pride of Kosciusko County. Tourney Play Opens In Lutheran League Union defeated Preble, 40-22, and Fuelling eliminated Trinity, 28-13, in opening round games of the tourney of the Lutheran laymen's grade league Saturday night.
