The not-so-funny comedy of errors the Aggie coaching search, developed into wa.s ended Wednes- | day when Dr. M T. Harrington announced Jim Myers of lowa State had accepted the position, j The 36-year-old Myers, the ; “forgotten man” of the long hunt, I signed a four-year contract at ! $16,000 a year, plus the rent-free use of a college owned house. Myers two weeks ago returned • to Ames, lowa, after a meeting with the A&M Faculty Athletic Council in Dallas, so surd he would get the 'job he named all ' but one of his probable assistants. ( Then the AgM board of direc- ; tors athletic sub-committee began chasing Navy Coach Eddie Erde- i latz, arid final word never came. ; Myers finally withdrew his name Jan. 13 when it appeared Erde-| latz would be hired. Just before Myers was named Wednesday, the athletic sub-com- : mittee that contacted resigned in what appeared to be | a "harmony” move to quiet widespread criticism of the school. ; Myers said the Aggies were so "whole hearted" in wanting .him he couldn't turn down their offer. "Two students even came up ■ here to see me and urg<?d me to ! take the job,” he said. “And then ■ j there was that long 'telegram Sat- ' urday — that kind of shook me up.” Myers referred to Garry Rollins, sports editor of the A&M \ student newspaper, the Battalion, ’ and Jon Hagler, commander of j the* corps of cadets, who flew to j Ames from College Station Mon- ' day, and to an 80-foot-long telegram signed by nearly 4.000 stu-j dents, including All - American | halfback John Crow and second ! team All-American tackle Charlie ' Krueger.
