Mme. Callas Scores Chicago Triumph Singer Captivates Chicago Audience CHCAGO <UP i — Tempestuous | Maria Meneghini - Callas scored one of the greatest triumphs of her career Wednesday night, over- > coming a case of nerves to sing I seven arias and captivate a Chi-1 cago audience. j The prima donna, admitting she' was "nervous but happy,” appeared near the breaking point' when she was rushed by photo- | graphers shortly before going on I < stage, but she suddenly relaxed : and her performance came off smoothly. 9 i A sell-out crowd of 3.800 persons. many of them socialites, i jammed the opera house for the I Alliance Francaise benefit per- I formance, and she received a standing ovation necessitatihg more than a dozen curtain calls . at the end. It was a triumphant return for the temperamental Mme. Callas ’ who began her operatic, career in * Chicago and once vowed never to appear here again after a hassle | with process servers. p

Believe New 1 Missile Test - 1 ’» Is Imminent Increased Activity Is Reported From Cape Canaveral Base CAPE CANAVERAL; Fla. fUPI —lncreased activity and improved weather indicated today another new ’ missile firing is imminent here—possibly a second Vanguard satellite launching effort. Lights have flooded the slender moon - carrying Vanguard rocket every night since it was tested on the gr ou nd- last —week. Pa st. launchings of the Vanguard have followed the ground statis tests by about a week to 10 days. , Another indication that the firing was probable before the end of the week was a new influx of Vanguard project : officials and technicians from the Martin Company, builder of the rocket. They crowded into hotels and motels in nearby Cocoa Beach, but they were giving no information. Secrecy was ordered on any actual attempt to put a baby moon in orbit, because of the blow “to this country's prestige when the Vanguard flopped last Dec. 6. Defense Department officials said advance publicity was largely to blame for the prestige
