The front end of the Girod car was damaged, and the left rear door of the Jones car was smashed. One Man Killed In Fire At Logansport Business Building Is Swept By;Fire LOGANSPORT iffl — Charles Weger. 59, was burned to death and two firemen suffered minor injuries when fire swept a busi-ness-apartment building here early Stinday. A family of six was rescued from their third-floor apartment by fire department aerial ladders and another family of five escaped down a stairway. Authorities said the fire apparently started in Weger’s secondfloor apartment as he poured oil into a stove. Mrs. James Duncan, who sub-leased the apartment to Weger, said Weger suffered a broken arm in a stairs fall last month. She said he may not have been able to handle the heavy oil container with one arm and -may— have spilled roil on the hot stove. Mrs. Duncan said she w a s awakenedby Weger’s call’ for help. - She ‘4aid she saw Weger throwing “burning things” out of ftte window and wefit back to lead _nßr four children to safety down a stairway. 0 Tom Sherman. 17, was awakened by smoke at about the same time. Three Accidents In County On Weekend Two Men Injured , In Auto Accident ■ Three accidents were investigated by the sheriff’s department and state police over the weekend. ' A car driven my Jerry Lee Williamson. 18, route 6. Decatur, struck an auto, operated by 'lra Claude Monee, 51. of Van Wert, at 9:40 p. m. Saturday on county road 33, about one-half mile north of Monroe. The Monee cas stopped in the lane of traffic And the Williamson vehicle, unable to stop in time, struck it in the rear, causing $lO damage to the Monee car and S6O to his own. Two local persons were injured in a two-car collision west of Decatur on highway 224, near Magley. at 7 p. m. Saturday. A car, driven by Wilbur T. Miller, 42. of Willshire, 0., struck a three-quarter ton pickup truck operated by Dale E. Fruechte, 29. of route 2, Magley. as Fruechte was attempting to turn off the highway into a private driveway. 3 Miller Was pinned in his wrecked auto z for over ‘3O minutes while members of the sheriff's department and .passers-by helped to extract him from the car. The dashboard of the car had to be jacked up to remove him from the car. taken to the hospital suffering from deep lacerations to his left heel and- hand, right knee and head. He also suffered chest injuries. He is reported in fairly good condition at the hospital at the present tiitfe. Fruechte taken to the hospital and was treated for injuries to the back of his head. He was kept overnight for observation and was released Sunday morning. - ' Damage was estimated at SSO to the Fruechte truck and the Miller vehicle was a total loss. Trooper Al Coppes and' deputy Charles Arnold investigated. About $1,500 damage resulted from an accident on highway 27 two miles south of Decatur Saturday afternoon involving cars driven by Gerald M. Kohne. 21, of Decatur, arid Betty J. Grafton, 21, of route 4. Mrs. Grafton had stopped inthe highway for a l,eft turn into her driveway, and Kohne, a Decatur Democrat reporter on his wdy to the county tourney, did not see her turn signal in time to stop. When he applied his brakes, he slid sideways into the car. The Kohne auto suffered about $1,006 damages to the left rear side. Damage estimated at SSOO occurred to the rear of the Grafton vehicle. Kohne will appear at 4:30 p. in. today on a charge of failure to yield the right of way. and Mrs. j Grafton was also arrested for ; driving without a valid operator’s ! license—State police officer Gene .
