Final Match Play In Bowling Tourney MINNEAPOLIS (UP) — The crowns of Don Carter, St. Louis, and Marion Ladewig, Grand Rapids, Mich., were up for grabs today as final match play rounds began in the 17th annual National All-Star bowling tourney. Both defending champs faced stiff tests in their first matches. Carter faces Tom Hennessey, St. Louis, whose 7,585 total for 36 games leads the 14 men who made the finals from a field of 192. Mrs. Ladewig meets Sylvia Wene, Philadelphia, in a battle of champs. Miss Wene won the title in 1955 after twice finishing second to Mrs. Ladewig who has won the title six times. Both Hennessey and Miss Wene had a tough scramble for the semi-final leadership- Hennessey, who led the field by only four pins going into the final block Wednesday, came up with a 1,252 series to take the lead by 37 pins. Miss Wene climaxed an uphill struggle by rolling an 802 in her last semi-final block of- four games. Marge Merrick, Dearborn, Mioh., who had led the women most of the way, dropped to fourth in the final round behind Charlotte Grubic, Steelton, Pa., and Merle Mathews, Long Beach, Calif. ■ Morris Cramer, Albany,. N-Y., was second in the men s division. Carter, Bill Lillard, Chicago, Mrs. Ladewig and Miss Anita Cantaline, Detroit, were automatically seeded to the finals. • Up until now standings have been determined by totcil pinfall, but in match play the Petersen point system -will be used. Each
of the men will roll four-game ’ matches against each finalist The ' final match will be paired according to the point system with No. T against No. 2.-No. 3 against No. 4, etc. The women roll tw'o-gatne matches against each finalist.
