Annual Report By St. John's Church All Reports Show Progress For 1957 The 37-page printed annual report for 1957 enabled the voters’ of St. John’s church on route 27 to follow all the annual reports presented at the meeting this week. The meeting was presided over by Edward Selking, route 1,, Decatur, newly-elected president for 1958. All reports showed progress made during 1957. A total of $47,240 was contributed by the membership of 369 communicants. The indebtedness on the new $190,000 school buildings was reduced from SBO,OOO to $66,000. The treasurer, Don Hoile of Hoagland, reported that $6,355.29 had been sent to the denomination’s headquarters for missions and an addition 2,056.75 for charitable purposes outside of the congregation. Marvin Meyer serves as financial secretary and Marvin Schroeder. route 1, Hoagland, is the treasurer for the school building fund. The pastor’s report showed 13 baptisms for last year and two weddings. Five members were lost through death and three transferred their membership to other congregations, while eight communicants were gained- through confirmation of juniors and 10 transferred from other congergations to St. John’s. Attendance *at holy communion increased from 1,718 ip 1956 to 2,005, and church attendance also increased from 20.090 to 22.349. Eight members are serving in the armed forces of their country. Franklin Scheimann, Wilfred Scherer, and Harold Bulmahn, all of route 1, will serve as deacons. Robert Buuck, Harold Sauer, and Alfred Scheumann, all qf Hoagland, and Fred W. Berning, route 1, Decatur, will serve as trustees. Herbert Witte will serve as vicepresident of the congregation. Members of the board for parish education are Herman Linnemeier and Robert Meyer of route 1, and Gerald Fuhrman of route 1, Hoagland. Gilbert Hoffman, Hoagland, and Lester Uffelmann, route 1, Decatur, are membership secretaries for the Lutheran laymen’s league, while Henry Getting is Lutheran hour repersentative. Bontrager Ponders Senate Candidacy INDIANAPOLIS ffll — S t a t e Sen. D. Russell Bontrager of Elkhart said today he may announce next week whether he will seek the Republican nomination for U. S. senator this year. , Bontrager, here for a legislative committee meeting, handed newsmen a prepared statement critical of Sen. William E Jenner for "handpicking" Governor Handley as his successor. The smallest telephone company in Michigan today is the Trout Creek and Calderwood Co. in the Upper Peninsula. The company serves 27 ’Customers.
