Yellow Jackets Lose To New Haven; Commodores Are Beaten By Hartford
YELLOW JACKETS The Decatur Yellow Jackets, trailing all the way. sustained their third Northeastern Indiana conference defeat and their fifth in 12 starts Friday night, bowing to the New Haven Bulldogs, 60-53, at the Decatur gym. Haven, now boasting a conference record of three triumphs and two defeats, rolled in eight points in the first three minutes before Larry Moses scored Decatur’s first point, a free throw The Yellow Jackets twice had the margin cut to four points but the Bulldogs built their advantage up to 24-13 at the end of the first gutter, as Al Herman poured in 10 points. The second period was played on even terms, although the Allen county quintet increased its bulge two points to take a 39-26 lead to the dressing room. The Bulldogs improved their advantage to 47-28 after three minutes of the third stanza, but the Jackets staged a sizzling, if brief spurt, as Bob Shraluka hit from the field and Moses poured in three two-pointers in less than a minute and New Haven's lead had melted to 11 points. The Bulldogs built this back up to 14 as the period closed, 52-38. After ShraiuKa and John Davis traded free throws to open the; final period. Bob Banks drove in 1 wide open and then stole the ball on the pass in for two quick buckets and the Jackets trailed by 10. Herman fouled out and Steve Dellinger«dropped in both free throws for a 53-45 score. The Jackets kept pecking away and finally came within four points at 57-53 with two minutes to play, but New Haven

COMMODORES The Hartford Gorillas, jumping into a quick ten point lead early in the game, defeated the Decatur, Catholic Commodores at Hartford Center Friday night, 74-50. Roger Moser, the Gorilla certter, connecting beautifully on a fading jump shot, pcvred 37 points through the hocp tc make the game a runaway for Hartford. • The Commodores got off to a slow start, scoring only four I points in the first five minutes of play while Hartford, with Moser and Mel Moeschberger doing most of the shooting, tallied 14. The end of the first quarter saw the Gorillas on top, 18-11. The second quarter opened with both teams trading quick scoring shots, but the Commodores; playing without their big center. Phil Reed, who is sidelined with a badly sprained right ankle, (filed to connect from the field for the rest of the period. Hartford, showing a well-balanced scoring attack, dumped 21 points in the bucket and led by ■2O points as the gun sounded, ending the half. 1 The Commodores began moving! Bob lord Leading In Polio Tourney Gary Schultz, chairman of the polio tourney, announced today that 93 entries were recived in the first week of bowling, an excellent start on the month-long event. This does not include any report from Berne. Proceeds from the tourney are contributed to the March of Dimes, which is being conducted throughout the nation this month. Leader after the first week of bowling is Bob Lord, with a 715. All scores are reported- Oh the handicap basis. Other leaders in the polio tourney are Oran Schultz 701, Troy Fenriig 676, Roily Ladd 672, Jim Ahr 669, Bob Sheets 668, Ph. Coyne 665, Al Selking 658, Molly Mies 657, Fred Hoffman 654. Schultz asks all league secretaries to encourage league teams to enter bowlers in the tourney and to turn over receipts and scores to him. The entry fee is sl, of which 50 cents goes to the March of Dimes, and 50 cents to the prize fund for contestants. As the ABC requires two-thirds of the money collected donated to the March of Dimes, the difference is being donated here by Al Anderson and the Hooker Paint Co. All polio tourney entries must be bowled in a sanctioned league, but bowlers may enter as often as they wish. Geneva Beats Monmouth By 57-50 Score The Geneva Cardinals evened up their season's record Friday night, scoring their fifth victory by defeating the Monmouth Eagles, 5750, at the Geneva gym. It was Monmouth's sixth loss in 11 starts. It was a nip and tuck battle all the way, with Geneva leading at all resting points, 14-12,. 30-27 and 41-37. The Cardinals, outscored from the field by six points, won the game at the foul line with 23 free throws to only 10 for the Eagles Tom Stuber topped the Cardinals with 31 points, 17 on charity tosses. Leading Teams Upset Victims Friday Night INDIANAPOLIS (UP) - The ranks of Indiana's major unbeaten high school basketball powers was reduced to four today following Madison’s 61-49 loss at Scottsburg and upsets of highly-rated Lafayette and Indianapolis Tech turned the chase for state honors into a red-hot “free-for-all.” Only four of seven members of the United Press "Big 10” in action emerged victorious, « Top-ranking South Bend Central ran its second to 10-1 as* Bill Floring flung in 23 points in a 67-47 East NIHSC victory over LaPorte. Third-rated Terre Haute Garfield crushed Indianapolis Howe, 64-50, for its ninth in a row Terry Dischinger hooped 29 for the winners. Kokomo, No. 8 beat North Central Conference rival Logansport, 87-7< behind jJimmy Ray|> 37point splurge, and ninth - ranked, Fort Wayne South pummMed eity foe North, 63-29. Broncos, Tech Lose Lafayette. No. 2 in the state, was edged by NCC rival Muncie Central, 58-57, and sixth-rated Indianapolis Tech lost a 66-64 conwarfare. Scottsburg, rated 18th, continued along the unbeaten trail as it racked up its 11th straight at the expense of the Cubs. The Warriors used balanced scoring to grab a 48-36 third-period lead and coast to an unexpectedly easy win as reserves finished out the game. Madison had won its first 9 starts. Butch Joris hit a freethrow with only 14 seconds left to give Central its one-point margin over Lafayette for the Broncos' second loss in 10 games. The 12th-rated Bearcats hit 10 straight points to open the second half, but had to hold back a last ditch rally by Lafayette before Joris stepped into the hero's role. Tech had a 64-60 lead but Ai> derson scored six straight points in the final minute climaxed by Cecil Robinson's bucket with six seconds retraining- Larry Bemis of Tech scored 25 points to take game honors as the Greenclads suffered their second loss against eight wins. Concordia Derailed Fort Wayne Concordia, which dumped powerful city rival Central ranks from the perfect ranks a week ago, also hit the skids. The llth-ranked Cadets were upended by crosstown foe Catholic, 55-53. Vincennes, No. 12, retained its Southern Conference lead with a 68-52 victory over Washington. Unranked but unbeaten Cathedral picked up No. 9 with a 63-32 lacing of outclassed Marion Bennett; 14th-ranked Evansville Bosse trimmed SIAC rival Jasper, 6152. with a final period rally, and 17th-rated Elwood ran its Central Conference record to 5-0 with an 80-63 win over Huntington. Dave Henn scored 29 points and Darrell McQuitty added 26 for the Panthers. In Western Conference action, Terre Haute Wiley edged Brazil, 53-49, and Greencastle had little trouble with Sullivan, 71-52.
