JTreamedjM | Comments ztfQj I On S.S. .®ra| | Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The Church is a Fellowship, Acts 2:42-47; Romans 15:9a, for Sunday, January 19. So far as fellowship is concerned, the early Jerusalem church was a model for the church in all succeeding ages. The first part of the' lesson describe a little so the life of the body of beieyers who became the first church soon after Pentecost. The latter part of the lesson was written by Paul some time later when the church was gaining strength. Its close fellowship, its unselfishness, and its common devotion to God and man makes It an ideal for us. V. 42. "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” The new Christians gave serious attention to the apostles’ teachings about Christ; they observed the sacraments; they spent time in prayer and enjoyed the fellowship of fellow believers. on every soul; and many wonders 1 and signs were done by the apost- ‘ les.” The apostles were able to ' perform miracles which filled the people with awe. 1 V.s. 44, 45. "And all that beieved ’ were together, and had all things common: . . . and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had i I need.” It was natural that the 1 new believers should cling together being of like mind and like spirit Some of the new Christians were far from home, with limited , resources, and, being in close fellowship, it was natural that there would be.a sharing of all the neces 1 sities of life with fellow Christians : as a sign of their following in Christ’s footsteps and showing their love for him by sharing and serving. Vs. 48, 47. “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the tem- - pie, and breaking bread from • house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. ... . . Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” The new converts continued their Jewish observances as they had before. The distinctive Christian observances supplement- ■ ed thejemple service. They ate together in different homes add followed the meal with the observance of the Lord’s Supper, Their joyous fellowship and devputness won the approyal of the Jews as a whole and many new .converts were added to the chiAch. Vs. 1.2, *3. "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. . . Let every one of us ■ please his neighbor lor his good to , edification. . . For even Christ pleased riot himself; but,—as it is written,; The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.” The pagan world despised weakness in any form and were totally InSensiti vc to the needs of others. So Christian faith brought a new element of love and benevolence into the world. Everyone should act so as to please his 1 (neighbour rather than himself even as Christ did not carry out his own pleasure but the will of God the Father in-serving mankind to the point of compete self sacrifice; V. 4. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” Paul indicates that the Old Testament was written for our instruction and has a meaning for the present time if we read it with the eyes of faith and hope. Vs. j>, ’’Now the God of patience and consolation grant, you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: ~ ■ That ye may with one ihindand one mouth glorify Gori.even the- Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Paul urged the early Christians to live in such harmony with one another that together they could with one voice glorify God This singleness of mind and heart is a requisite of true Christian fellowship, , Vs. 7,8, 9. "Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ aso received us to the glory of God . ; . Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: . . And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy,” No one should be excluded from Christian fellowship because ot “personal differences of thought or of conscience. Just as Christ deceived all to himself, so should Christians accept all men m a spint of brotherhood. Christ’s ministry was bestowed 1 upon Jews and Gentiles alike. No true Chris*

This - fellowship implies a sharing of rei ponsibilities, a sharing of prob--3 ems and sorrows. Christianity inI troduced something new into the - world in its emphasis on the re- » gard of the strong for the weak. 5 This means being kind to one ans other, patient with weakness, havi ing a forgiving spirit. The early g church was exemplary in its emi phasis on harmony of its members, and singleness of purpose — to g love and serve Christ. j Lesson Prayer: Dear Father, n ! we thank Thee that Thou continues t (to reveal Thyself in our hearts and i that Thy creative presence is still j i in the world.
