Tied for number one topic of conversation among the students . upon their return are the semester tests and county tourney, both of which occur next week. - D.C.H.S.— The senior home ec cjjrss has taken up the study of the care of the home. They have learned how to take care of their own room to make it both neat and attractive. —-DdC.H.S.— A staff meeting of the DC Hi Light was held December 19 after school. Included in the meeting was the planning of the contents for the next issue. The Second issue is expected to appear at the end of January. - D.C.H.S.— The Hartford Gorillas provide ewftmodores’ last opposition before the county tourney. The contest will be played tomorrow night on the Hartford floor, —D.C.H.S.— With the 67 to 62 loss at the hands of Anderson St Mary's last Saturday night, the Commodores teat possession of the Victory Jug. the rotating Central Indiana Catholic conference trophy. The second team was also defeated, 38 to 35. —D.C.H.S.— The juniors are becoming well i versed in American literature. Re- j cently they memorized a short summary of the lives of 21 modern authors. jf- —D.C.H.S.— Representing DCHS at the Rotary meetings during the month of January will be Ray O’Campo and Steve Sutton. —D.C.H.S.— The seniors received aq extraspecial Christmas present in the ; form of their class pictures which arrived the day before Christmas. Many have already passed them to I ttjeir friends. Painted pictures of the senior class can be seen in the window of Edward, Studio. —D.C.H.S.— ~ ~ i Two encyclicals, “Rerum Nova- ■ rum” by Pope Leo XIII and "Qua- -I dragesimo Anno" by Pope Pipus \ XI, are presently being studied by the economics class. Both of these encyclicals, deal with the : condition of the working classes. I Economics term papers were also handed in this week. —D.C.H.S.— Six new Royal-typewriters were-'i added to the typing department { ™ over Christmas vacation. The stif- ! dents appreciate the new typewriters, which will enable then! to gain the best efficiency possible. —D.C.H.S. — " ''Swing your partner round and round!” Approximately 40 kids answered that call and enjoyed J an evening of square dancing last x Sunday at the CLC Hall. Jackets defeated the Columbia City Eagles at the Columbia City gym. The score of the game was 77-60. —D.H.S.— The Decatur second team went down in defeat to the Eagles by a score of 55-42. —D.H.S.Barbara Kalver was the winner of the Rotary speech contest held December 19- Runner-up in the contest was Susan Custer. Others who participated were Janice Voshell, Judy Lane, Jane Wass, and Ken Eliasson. Congratulations to all six finalists. —D.H.S.— —■ z There was no rest for the DHS students during vacation. The Yelow Jackets played in a holiday tourney at Bluffton. Other teams that participated were Peru, Portland, and the Bluffton Tigers. —D.H.S.— Friday night, December 27, the Jackets met the Peru Tigers on the Bluffton floor. Decatur edged out a victory by a score of 49-46 in the first game. Bluffton defeatbed Portland in the second game. —D.H.S.— Saturday night, Portland defeated Peru in the consolation game. The Yellow Jackets racked up one more victory as they defeated Bluffton 56-53 to win the 1957 holiday tourney. The trophy that DHS received is on dispay in the trophy case in the main hall. Nice work, team! ' —DHSThe speech students have started their Legion speeches for the class eliminations. This year, as before, each student wrote a 10-12 minute speech on the constitution. The first speech was given yesterday, and they will continue to be given until the middle of next week. Each person in the class has put in a lot of time in writing and memorizing these speeches. —D.H.S.— Judy Hott and Mary Alice Kneuss were injured in an automobile accident Sunday, while the driver, Ann McDonald, escaped without injuries. The DHS students wish Judy and Mary Alice a speedy recovery, and hope to see them back in school before long. , ■ —D.R.S.— Have you noticed the basketball programs at the recent home games? Thanks to the Journalism class, the Decatur fans now know who all the players are, their class, etc. , —D.H.S.— r Where do the DHS students go onthe nights when they’re not home busily studying? Ice skating at Krick's ponds! Every night one sees a crowd of people with three or four sweatshirts on, braving the cold weather. Many students are none-the-worse for their ice skating experiences, and a good time seems to be had by all. —DHS.- - Tomorrow night, the Yellow Jackets will entertain the New Haven Bulldogs at the DHS gym. The team and the fans' hope for ! a fourth straight victory to raise I the present record of seven wins, four losses. Go get ’em, Jackets! —D.H.S.— —A dance, sponsored by the band, will be held at the Center after the game tomorrow night. The name of the dance is the "Basket Brawl” and everyone is invited to attend. —D.H.S.— MONMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL 'By Kenny Peek "We won! We won!" S The B-team had about the same story to tell, winning one and losing ime. Saturday night s game was a hard one to lose, as the boys went down in defeat in an overtime J 5-29. was a job well done, Mr. Hoffman!! M. H. S. Tuesday, the MHS junior high and freshman teams both lost to the Decatur teams. The junior high score was 30 to 21 and 38 to 14 was the freshman score. M. H. S. -j;,...,..; Barbara Carr, a sophmore at Indiana University, and George Bleeke, Ron Bittner .and Roger Bieberich, all three freshman at Valparaiso University, paid Monmouth students and faculty a visit last Friday. Nice seeing you kids again!! M. H. S. Later on in this month the juniors will conduct their magazine sales campaign. This is one of the methods that MHS* students have always used to finance their senior trip. So friends and patrons of the school are asked to save their subscriptions and renewals for subscriptions until a junior comes to call M. H. S. This is the one week that everybody here at MHS will be glad to see fade into the past. Since this is the end of the semester, of course, their have been tests, tests and more tests. Carolyn Hoffman, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hoffman, is the senior who will write this column this last semester. and are back to start the last half of the year on the right foot. The student at PMHS hope you had a very Merry Christmas and will have a very prosperous new year. —P.M.H.S.— The senior class is very busy on the “58” Spotlight. The first 20 pages have been sent and the second 20 pages are to be in by the 13th of this month, so the seniors have a very big job ahead of them. — They have a few new ideas for the year book this year. —P.M.H.S.— The senior English class will participate in the Ball State speech contest Saturday. They are going to give some poetry and also some readings. The following, students will made the trip: Marrabelle Wolfe, Kay Bollenbacher, Janice Smith, Billy Von Gunten, and Gary Shoaf. Lots of luck kids. i —P.M.H.S.— The juniors are really busy popping their pop corn for the ball
games. They gather in the home ec. room and pop com all afternoon. They a haven’t yet decided what they will do about the Saturday evening game with Ohio City. They will probably come right before the ball game and pop It. —P.M.H.S.— The freshman ag. boys took another field trip to Roy Price’s to judge catte. They went Monday right before dinner. They went tc learn more about selecting good cattle. - P.M.H.S.— The "Mighty Spartans’* played the Willshire Bear cats on the Pleasant Mills floor Tuesday evening. The Band marched on the floor and the twirlers twirled. The color guard also marched out on the floor for the lag salute, Mike McGill played the "Star Spangled Banner” on his horn. You did a good job, kids. Keep up the good work. —P.M.H.S.— Pictures will be taken Friday for the year book. All the athletic pictures, band, chorus, and other pictures which have not yet been taken will be taken, so if you are in any of the following, don’t forget to bring your band suits and any other clothes you will need. —P.M.H.S.— Mrs. Ehrsam has been preparing some ensembles to go to the
District music contest, Eebruary 1, at Ft. WayM. The girls’ quartet, girls’ trio, boys* quartet, double sextet, two solos, and a duet are just some of the things that will be taken to the contest. The following are the ones who will participate in the contest: Judy Williamson, Kathy Shoaf, Betty Meyers, Caroyn Luginbill, Sharon Bebout, Janice Smith, Gary Millington, Sherman Archer, Sheldon Light, Steve Riley, Dick Johnson and Larry Jackson. Mrs. Ehrsam says, “If they practice they can really go places.” Good luck, kids. —P.M.H.S.— The senior class, with the help of their sponsor and co-sponsor, have chosen their class motto. They have given it great consideration and they have come up with the motto which they like best. It is “This Far and Farther.’’ -P.M.H.S.— The seniors are waiting on their name cards which they should get very soon. Some of them will take longer to get here because they are a different kind which takes longer to make. P.M.H.S.— The twelth grade office practice class has received packet of letters, legal papers, etc., as might be found in an office job, they will be of very much help and they should also be very interest-
