Ohio Sfafe Is Hard-Pressed To Edge Oregon By JOHNGRIFFIN United Press Sports Writer The form chart stood up pfctty well in the bowl game drama on New Year’s Day but the name of Don Sutherin went into the books today as the man who prevented what could have been the biggest upset in the history of the Rose Bowl. The close call suffered by the national champion Buckeyes stole the holiday spotlight from Navy’s 20-7 triumph over Rice in the Cotton Bowl, Mississippi’s surprising 30-7 rout of Texas in the Sugar Bowl, and Oklahoma’s 4821 trouncing of Duke in the Orange Bowl. Oregon went into the Rose Bowl clash before 100,000 as a 21-point underdog, the biggest odds ever quoted on the classic at Pasadena, Calif. But the Webfoots won everything—first downs, yards gained, most valuable awards (to quarterback Jack Crabtree'— everything, that is, except the game Navy, a one-point Cotton Bowl favorite, beat Rice on the rock ’em, sock ’em line, play of Tony Stremic (a supposed cripple with an ankle injury), Bob Reifsnyder, and Pete Jokanovich. The Middie maulers jolted Rice ball - toters lose from the pigskip five times and two of these recovered fumbles led to Navy scores. Jof Tranchini. Harry Hurts, and Ned Oldham scored the Navy TD’S although passer Tom Fonpestal won
