Indiana Prep Teams Involved In Tournaments INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—A powerful array of Indiana high school basketball big-shots, led by topranking Lafayette and South Bend Central, Fort Wayne Central and Jeffersonville risk their lofty status in perilous holiday tournaments today. Lafayette’s Broncos and the thirdrated South Benders, who knocked heads only last Saturday, were favored to reach Saturday's finals in the annual Lafayette classic. Lafayette goes against Fort Wayne Catholic after South Bend Central opens the session against tough Elwood. Jeffersonville was top dog in its own session, and Fort Wayne Central, although favored, may get an argument or two in Elkhart’s holiday shindig. Other major sessions open today at Bluffton, Garrett, Huntington, Plymouth, South Bend and Vincennes. High-scoring Pete Auksel, a 6-5 junior sharpshooter, pumped in 46 points to lead host East Chicago Washington to victory in the first major holiday tourney Thursday. Auksel scored 21 points as the Senators—ranked 16th in the United Press Coaches poll—dumped Valparaiso, 79-70, in the championship game. The winners took an early lead and Valpo never was in toe game. In the preliminaries. Auksel chipped in with 25 points as Washington downed Hammond Noll, 6557, in a one-sided contest on its ♦way to toe final game. Gary Roosevelt, tied with Michigan City for 12th spot in the poll, took consolation honors by defeating Noll, 7667. The Panthers lost to Valpo, 6866, in an afternoon contest as ace scorer Ron Heflin saw only minor action. Heflin, bothered with a leg injury, did not play in the consolation game. LaPorte and East Chicago Roosevelt advanced to tonight’s firrale at Michigan City. . LaPorte had difficulty with stubborn Hammond before the Slicers came out on top, 57-51. The score was tied three times and the lead changed hands nine times in the fourth period in the closely-fought game. Lew Reynolds scored 20 for &e losers snd Tom' Blackburn netted 16 for LaPorte. Roosevelt derailed Michigan City. 53-51 In overtime, despite the fact that toe host team had the edge in fielders. A poor five of 12 attempts from the free throw line led to the downfall of the defending champs. Nap Goshay hit on a jump shot with 23 seconds remaining to give Roosevelt the victory. it was only the first time in the five-year history of the event that Michigan City had failed to reach the final* H S. Aussies Take ■ Davis Cup 3rd ; Straight Year MELBOURNE (UP) — Mervyn Rose, the “forgotten man” of Australian tennis. and young Mai Anderson defeated an American pickup team today in the Davis Cup challenge round doubles match, enabling the Aussies to walk off with the famed mug for the third straight year. Rose, appearing in his first challenge round match since 1951, paired beautifully with Anderson in routing Vic Seixas of Philedel- - phia and husky Barry Mac Kay of I Dayton, Ohio, in straight sets, 6-4, ■ 6-4, 8-6, to give the Aussies an unI beatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five , I series. Australia whipped the United i States, 5-0 in each of the last two challenge round matches and can ■ complete another whitewash job I by winning Saturday’s concluding ■ singles “exhibitions." i Billy Talbert, non-playing captain of the US. squad, lost one i of the biggest gambles of his life 1 when he chose 22-year-old Mac Kay t to team with Seixas in today’s back-to-the-wall match. i Mac Kay just wasn't good - enough and neither was Seixas, a ) seven-year veteran of the Davis - Cup wars, to handle the Aussies on this warm, sunshiny day on the ’ famed Kooyong Courts. The Aussies won the first set by ■ breaking Mac Kay's service in the [ seventh game, Rose scoring the i • winning point on a scorching ; • cross-court drive. 1 In the third set, Seixas. dropped ; • his service in the fifth game but the Yanks deadlocked the score at 4-4 in the eighth game by breaking Rose. However that gave the ■ Americans only a temporary re-, ■ prieve. Seixas dropped his service again in the 13th game without notching a single point, allowing the Aussies to gain a 7-6 lead. Anderson served the next game and Australia swept to a quick 40love advantage. On the next service, Mac Kay returned Anderson s drive but Barry’s next volley missed the baseline by inches and ' the Aussies closed out the match in 67 minutes.
