Adams county was much more fortunate, motorwise than many other Hoosier areas. There were no death and tragedies oyjer the holiday and little law Violation was reported. o o Let's keep up our good record of very few auto mishaps. It means that county enforcement officials are on their toes and making the highways safe for travel. —O—O— A few more days and Christmas vacation will be over and then before long the first half of the school year will close. Time flies and before long Commencement exercises will be announced for all the schools. Then will come another summer vacation, long before everyone but the students are ready for it o o—Detroit Lions face the Cleveland Browns in the championship pro football game of the year. Both teams have excellent personnel and we'd guess it would be a dose game. If the Lions can get through their usual fateful first half, they should win. Either team which wins will know it has been through a game. ——o——o— — Rumors continue to fly around the Court House and no doubt there will be changes in the appointive county family. The present county appointees have done excellent work, except they failed to get their Democrat friends out to the polls and as a result, the Republicans win the majority on the board of Commissioners, the body which makes mqnt of the appointments.

Forecasts are that the mild weather is about over and before very long we can expect much colder weather and that probably means snow and other winter accompaniments. Guesses are now that New Years day will be more winterized than was Christmas. ■ o o— It is just as bad to permit a/ motorist to pay too much to parH and Decatur has numerous meters which take from 20 cents upward to fill out the two hours. This is no fault of the police officers, but if worn out meters are permitted to remain in service the trade in Decatur which we have jealously built up by making this the best business area in northern Indiana will soon go to pot. We have beard a good many shoppers complaining about the meters. It is neither right nor is it fair for the merchants who are trying their best to satisfy shoppers. ■ " O ■ ■■■O — The present city administration is closing its second year of a four year term. Mayor Cole and his aides have done a good job of returning order and economy to city government. Everything is not as they would desire it, but every department is working hard to reach that happy medium in government where everything is going economically and in good order. We have faith in the Cole administration, and believe it has made great forward strides. All indications are that a big majority of the people are satisfied. A few whose toes have been stepped on are mad and a |ew who thought they should uve all <he city’s business are mad. That is a sign of good health in government. ■ I

CHAPTER 29 THE ADVERSARIES were be--1 ginning to tire. Their movements were less deft, their blows less accurate. David was bleeding from the mouth and from a wound over an eye; Andrew, from the nose. Their clothes were torn and dusty. But neither of them would yield an inch except under extreme pressure; and if either was forced to recede It was only to return fiercely to the attack. They were obviously going to fight to the point of exhaustion, until the last strength was drained from bruised, tired muscles, as a matter of masculine pride and perversity. Deborah saw Andrew driving at David with short, punishing jabs. She saw David retaliate with a punch to the heart that made the artist grunt Suddenly she clenched her own fists and began to scream in hysteria She could not stop. It was as if the screams were being torn out of her. She was shocked beyond all self-control. The men drew apart, looking awkward and guilty. They glared at each other, then Andrew walked unsteadily to Deborah and put a hand on her shoulder. She shook him off, unable to bear pls touch after the injuries and hurts that hand had done its best to inflict The artist rubbed the hand over his face and glanced at the resultant smear of blood. Deborah's screaming quietened to hoarse sobs. David Gray looked from one to the other, then turned and limped away. Hector Maclnch leaned on his stick with the assurance of one awaiting in keen anticipation the second act of an absorbing play. "It’s all over now,** said Andrew to Deborah, between gasps for air. "Don’t cry." "You .... you were like beasts!” "I’m sorry you had to see IL” "You’re not sorry!" She dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief. “You’d go at each other again without a second thought” Stumbling, she picked her way between tufts of tall grass, clumps of gorse and outcroppings of rock to the sheltered hollow where they had lunched. Andrew somewhat unsteady on his legs, helped her to gather up the residue of the picnic. Carrying the wicker basket he walked with her to her car. He stowed the basket in the baggage compartment, opened the dorr, and handed her in to the driving seat. Feeling constant tremors that passed thrtiugh him, she rea-

Twilight Passes By Sputnik Over U. S. Different Sections Saturday, Sunday l CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (W — Dog-carrying satellite Sputnik II will make three twilight passes across different sections of the United States Saturday and Sunday. the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory said today. Traveling from southwest to northeast, Sputnik) II will appear Saturday over eastern New York state and New England beginning about 4:05 p.m. CST. The second pass, starting at 5:45 p. m , will cover a pie-shaped wedge from eastern Montana to eastern Kansas then north to Wisconsin. The third traversal, beginning at 7:30 p.m., will pass south of San Francisco across to eastern Montana. Sputnik II will appear over northern Maine at 3:40 p.m, Sunday, the observatory said. The second pass, starting at 5:20 p.m;, will be over a small wedge of the United States from North Dakota down to northern Missouri and up

lized now greatly the fight had broached him physically. “I know you don’t take good advice.” he said, in the same harsh, breathless voice as before, "but I’ve got to say this. Keep away from me. Forget about me. I have nothing but shame and misery to offer any woman.” Slamming the car door, he turned and made his way painfully to where his easel stood. • • • It was to be an informal little party, a gathering of friends who had entertained Deborah, or whom Joyce wanted her to meet, a sprinkling of teachers and their wives from Ewan’s school,' and some members of the Amateur Dramatic Society. They would help themselves at a makeshift bar to sherry, Madeira or cider. There would be tea and coffee on a sidetable. There would be sandwiches made to be eaten tn two bites; small sausage tolls; triangles of toast bearing chicken livers wrapped in bacon, fillets of anchovy, chopped egg and toasted cheese, or spread with savory pastes. And, of course, the fancy cakes the Scots love and are artists at creating. Nothing elaborate. When telephoning the invitations, Joyce said, “From fouriah to a bit after seven.” A simple affair, hardly a party at all. No need for fuss. It would run itself. None of It would be the least trouble. Having so decided, Joyce rolled up her sleeves and went to work. For a full day, from morning to early evening, she and Deborah and the houseworker who ‘obliged’ from time to time scoured, dusted, polished until the house could have stood inspection from cellar to attic. "Who’s going to go looking under beds and behind wardrobes?" asked Deborah, a little wearily. “You don’t know Gamock,” replied Joyce, briskly carrying on with the attack on fugitive specksDeborah wondered what domestic upheaval would have been necessary had they been giving the sort of affair that does call for a preliminary fuss. On the day of the party the whole morning and part of the afternoon was spent tn preparing food, for Joyce had a card-index memory for every edible curiosity that had graced her friends’ parties and was determined to outdo them all. The guests would have arrived to find her still regrouping dishes, polishing glasses that gleamed already and marshalling china in-new arrangements: had not Deborah taken her by. the

to Wisconsin. The third twilight passage will begin at 7:00 p.m., covering a wedge of land from Puget Sound south to central Nevada and northerly to eastern Montana. The Russians’ second was expected to make three twilight passes over the nation tonight, the observatory said. Scientists said Sputnik II would be visible over the United States less frequently until Jan. 1 and not at all during early January. Two-Year-Old Girl Killed In Accident HUNTINGTON iW — Rebecca Josephine McDaniel, 2, R. R. 1, Alexandria, was killed today indirectly because she coughed. Police said the child was riding in a car seat beside her father, William, 44, when she coughed. McDaniel took his eyes off the road a moment to look down at his daughter. The car swerved off Ind. 105 ■ four miles south of Andrews, hit a pole and glanced back into the road. A door flew open and the child was thrown into the highway. Her skull was fractured. _J-. . -- - _ . - -

shoulders at three and propelled her upstairs to change. They left their doors open to enable them to talk from room to room without overly raising their voices. “I wish you hadn’t asked the Maclnches." called Deborah. Joyce’s reply was only a mumble until she removed a safety pin from between her teeth. “After the lovely dinner they gave us?" ’ “She is a dear but I can’t stand him. He's such a sadistic beast.’’ “Well, I do admit he’s a bit provoking but, as this isn’t their cup of tea, they’ll probably come late and leave early. You can stand him for an hour. We couldn’t possibly have left them out.’’ “No, I suppose not." For a time Joyce did all the talking, which did not discomfit her in the least. As long- as she had a listener she would carry on a sporadic monologue for hours. Deborah unpacked the bronze statuette she had bought in Glasgow, admiring again its slim elegance. The fight on the hillside had frustrated her intention of telling Andrew the mass of fact and surmise that was in her mind and leaving it to him to carry on from there. For the present, at least, she could not intrude on him again. He had said vehemently, “Keep away from me.” True, he was thinking of her safety and happiness; but a rebuff like that could not be ignored. As she saw it, the case now hinged on the missing murder weapon, the other statuette. Find that, said intuition, and the answer would be plain. She already had a plan for finding the thing; a plan that frightened her fc’hcn she thought of it. She was not at all sure she would find the courage to carry it through. If only she had been able to pour out her thoughts to Andrew. If only the two men had not behaved like belligerent schoolboys, breaking up what had promised to be a wonderful afternoon. Meanwhile, here was the replica of the murder weapon; and she had a use for it As sodn as she was dressed she carried it down and placed it, on one of the bookcases in the living room. It was an object to draw the eye. Perhaps one of the guests would betray a consciousness of having seen a similar object before. She would be watchful . .. The trap is sprung with surprising results as The Lonely. Man continues | tomorrow in (Name of Paper).
